Research Assistant - Hepatology

The Richmond Institute for Veterans Research (RIVR), a non-profit organization, associated and located within the Richmond Veterans Administration Medical Center, in Richmond Virginia, is looking for a strong candidate for a Research Assistant position at the Richmond VA Medical Center liver center.  This is NOT a government position but requires US citizenship or legal permanent residency.

Summary

We are seeking a candidate with a bachelor’s degree in psychology or related science field to fulfill a research assistant role supporting clinical and translational research initiatives pertaining to liver disease. Prior experience in research, data entry, and processing biological samples (blood, stool, and saliva) is strongly preferred. This is a full-time position (40 hrs. per week). Major duties include questionnaire and cognitive testing administration, sample handling and processing, and data management using standard protocols.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

1. Explains testing procedures and objectives to subjects, prepares subjects for procedure/testing as appropriate, and works with subjects to facilitate compliance with protocol and procedures to ensure appropriate test completion
2. Administers questionnaires, cognitive testing and interviews to research subjects
3. Aids and assists PI by monitoring suitability of patients for projects and/or testing, identifying certain patients for recruitment, and compliance with executing protocols
4. Assists PI and research teams in administering and completing behavior rating scales, as appropriate
5. Maintains records of testing supplies, instruments, and equipment on hand and manages replacement of stock as necessary
6. Ensures confidentiality of subject files, test results, and recommendations
7. Maintains security of testing materials
8. Handles and processes study samples (stool, saliva, serum, swabs) and proper storage until shipping per protocols
9. Enters data into databases as required per protocol
10. Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned

Minimum Job Requirements

Bachelor's degree in science-related field with at least 1 year of directly related experience including: previous training and experience in laboratory testing; familiarity with EMR systems, RED Cap or EDC platforms; Microsoft Office; and experience in behavioral or psychophysiological data collection and processing are preferred.

• Commitment to accuracy in data collection and processing
• Knowledge of scientific research principles, practices, and protocols, including CITI certification
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of records and information
• Knowledge of supplies, equipment, service ordering, and inventory control
• Ability to manage multiple protocols/projects simultaneously
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively work with a wide range of individuals and stakeholders in a diverse community

Working Conditions and Physical Effort

• No or very limited exposure to physical risk
• Work is normally performed in a combination of clinical, office, and laboratory settings
• Prolonged computer use
• May require occasional extended off-tour hours to support research team
