Who We Are:

The Danvers Historical Society is dedicated to promoting the rich history of the original Salem Village and the Town of Danvers through preservation and the creation of engaging educational programs.

The Historical Society owns and operates Glen Magna Farms, which includes the magnificent Peabody/Endicott Mansion, the National Historic Landmark 1794 Derby Summer House designed by Samuel Mc Intire and award-winning gardens.

In 1926, the Massachusetts Horticultural Society awarded Ellen Peabody Endicott with the Hunnewell Gold Medal for the beautiful gardens of Glen Magna Farms. When you walk the 11 acres, the past still resonates with every fragrant blossom and with each step through the winding garden paths. Today at Glen Magna Farms, our team is working to restore the gardens to the 1920s landscape.

Role: Seasonal Buildings & Grounds Team Member with focus on Gardening & Landscaping

Season: April-October/November with potential to expand

Hours: Approximately 25 hours per week with potential to grow the role 

Pay: $20-$24 per hour based on experience

Requirements:

• Certificate or degree in horticulture is desirable

• Knowledgeable in the care and maintenance of annuals and perennials

• Ability to identify weeds and invasive plants

• Ability to work in variable weather conditions

• Ability to execute tasks independently with minimal supervision

• Experience in the use of landscape and gardening equipment including mowers, string trimmers, edgers, shovels, pruners

• Carry a positive attitude and engage in a professional, personable manner with colleagues, trustees, volunteers, DHS membership, and guests

• Carpentry and painting skills a plus

• An interest in history and historic preservation is desirable

• Experience in estate or public gardening a plus

• Driver’s license and willingness to drive small pickup truck owned by DHS (no CDL required)

• Minimum 18 years of age

• Ability to lift up to 40 pounds

• Some weekend availability may be required

Typical tasks:

• Perform basic gardening and landscaping at the historic gardens of Glen Magna Farms and other Danvers Historical Society properties

• Assist other staff and volunteers during Danvers Historical Society fundraising events

• Help with building care of historic properties such as painting and cleaning gutters

• Must be able to work some weekends during event season (May-October): weekend work includes cleaning of grounds, inspection of property to make sure the buildings are sound and secure, basic gardening and managing restroom trailer before/after an event starts.
