SUMMARY The Brian P. Kennedy Leadership Fellowship at the Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) is an immersive, two-year program designed to prepare the next generation of art museum leaders by blending curatorial practice with executive-level leadership experience. The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong foundation in art history with a preferred focus on African Art and an interest or specialization in historic African Art and provenance research.
The Toledo Museum of Art (TMA) seeks to become the model art museum in the United States for its commitment to quality and its culture of belonging. This vision and the ways in which it is operationalized are established in the Museum'sStrategic Planas well as its integrated Belonging Plan's goals address our organization's effort at structural change to promote diversity, equity, access and inclusion.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES Executive Leadership and Strategy: -Collaborate with the Museum Director and senior leadership team on institutional strategy and daily executive operations. -Participate in the implementation and evaluation of the Museum's Strategic Plan and operating model. -Support the broader leadership team in identifying new earned income revenue opportunities. -Contribute to board development, donor stewardship, and policy development initiatives.
Curatorial and Collections Stewardship of African and African Diasporic Art: -Conduct or update a comprehensive assessment of TMA's collection within area(s) of expertise. -Participate in shaping the Museum's strategic collections plan, including the 2027 reinstallation of the collection. -Support the conceptualization, research, and development of exhibitions, programs, and publications. -Collaborate on interdisciplinary and cross-institutional projects that broaden curatorial scholarship, in consultation with the Director of Curatorial Affairs. -Respond to scholarly and public inquiries about the collection.
African Art Curation and Innovation: -Assist with the evaluation, documentation, and care of African and African diasporic sculpture, paintings, works on paper, textiles, and installation art. -Collaborate with the other teams (including curatorial, collections, conservation, and IT) to implement best practices for acquisition and provenance research of African art. -Work with artists, donors, dealers, and specialists to ensure the authenticity, quality of African art in TMA's collection. -Support the creation of condition reports, documentation protocols, and conservation plans that adhere to emerging standards in the field.
Capstone Project Development (Exhibition, Interpretation and Public Engagement): -Propose, plan, and lead a significant project (e.g., exhibition, publication, public program) aligned with institutional goals. -Collaborate with Development and Finance to budget, fundraise, and manage project execution. -Participate in the research, development, and implementation of exhibitions and programs that feature African and African diasporic art. -Develop interpretive and educational materials that help visitors engage meaningfully with African art. -Stay current with trends in scholarship and interpretation of African art. -Present project outcomes to Museum leadership and potentially external audiences.
Advance TMA's Culture of Quality and Belonging: -Supports the implementation of the Museum's Belonging Plan in partnership with the Chief Culture & Brand Experience Officer. -Contributes to a forward-thinking collecting strategy for African and African diasporic art aligned with TMA's reinstallation goals and vision for 21st-century art engagement. -Explore collaborative opportunities with other institutions, artists, and conservators to position TMA as a leader in African art curation.
Professional Development and Mentorship: -Actively participate in the structured immersion experiences or exposures related to museum operations and field-wide issues. -Receive individual coaching or mentoring from senior curatorial and executive leaders. -Manage a project or program within the first year with mentorship support.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Candidates must have completed their M.A. or Ph.D. within the last three years in art history or a related discipline with a preferred focus on African art.
SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, COMPETENCIES, AND ABILITIES -Specialized knowledge of Art History or a related field. -Strong academic performer with an interest in museum leadership positions in the future. -Demonstrated interest in key issues affecting the Museum fields. -Must be committed to the Toledo Museum of Art for the full two-year duration of the appointment. Further, The Brian P. Kennedy Leadership Fellowship is a temporary, two-year appointment designed to support professional development in the museum field. Employment is limited to the duration of the fellowship and does not carry an expectation of extension or transition into a permanent position.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Frequently attends Museum and development events inside and outside of TMA, with non-standard, often extended work hours, weekends, and occasional overnight travel. Standard open office work environment shared with co-workers, with related phone, computer, and printer noise. Position requires ability to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery and audio/visual equipment such as a copy machine, printer and phone and sound systems.
