Summary
This position is responsible for assisting in laboratory instruction for students in several MLS laboratory courses; maintaining the laboratory to meet all safety standards; ordering supplies; keeping inventories; maintaining and repairing the equipment; evaluating new equipment or supplies for purchase; student and program recruitment activities; supervising student lab assistant positions; participating in policy and assisting faculty with maintaining program accreditation documentation
Essential Functions
- Manage the MLS labs:
- Prepare laboratory sessions for all laboratory courses: work up new laboratory procedures, maintain stock cultures for microbiology/mycology, prepare reagents, prepare microbiology media, collect specimens and other materials/supplies from hospital labs, and maintain instrumentation
- Assist the instructor of record for MLS lab courses: arrange practical exams, prepare unknown specimens, and assist students during lab activity
- Order lab supplies and dispose of hazardous material
- Review and update lab manuals, Standard Operating Procedures, and instructional material
- Tear down/clean up after laboratory activities
- Keep inventory of laboratory supplies
- Maintain all safety equipment, documentation, and procedures in student lab
- Serve as the autoclave manager for Moseley Hall: Safely operate the autoclave; intake waste to be treated from science programs housed in Moseley Hall; Perform quality control and maintenance; Maintain proper autoclave and waste disposal documentation; Schedule required EPA inspections; Schedule and assist with treated waste pick-ups
- Recruitment and Retention Activities: Participate in activities throughout the academic year to promote the MLS program
- Maintain Student Records and Documentation: Assist faculty and MLS program director in storage and maintenance of program documents as required by NAACLS
- Supervise Student Lab Workers: Serve as primary supervisor for student lab
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
The following Degree is required:
- Associate's Degree. Degree must be conferred at time of application.
The following Degree is preferred:
- Associate's Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or related
The following Experience is required:
- 1 year of experience in areas of the clinical lab
One or more of the the following Certifications is required:
- Medical Laboratory Technician Certification (ASCP)
- Medical Technologist Certification (ASCP)
- Medical Laboratory Scientist Certification (ASCP)
Additional Information
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Advanced laboratory practice skills
- Knowledge of instrument troubleshooting and repair, computers, audiovisual equipment, microscopes, and office software
- Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team
- Ability to carefully document research findings
- Ability to work safely and accurately in a laboratory setting
