Role Description

This position is for a Senior Counsel, Regulatory Law, located in Kalamazoo, MI (preferred) or Parsippany, NJ. As a member of the Legal Team, this candidate will provide specialized regulatory legal support and strategic advice globally across Zoetis's animal health businesses with a particular focus on developing and implementing regulatory strategies, processes, and training. The candidate will also assist Veterinary Medicine Research & Development colleagues on contractual and general day-to-day legal matters. This position will work closely with other Legal and Veterinary Research and Development colleagues, as well as the Regulatory Affairs, Public Affairs, Global Manufacturing and Supply, Commercial, and Compliance organizations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide specialized expert regulatory legal counsel and strategic advice to senior leaders on global animal health product marketing regulations, manufacturing and packaging regulatory actions, animal welfare, and other regulations that may impact our business or our customers, including U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), EMEA and State regulatory matters. This position will work closely with other Legal and Veterinary Research and Development colleagues, as well as the Regulatory Affairs, Public Affairs, Global Manufacturing and Supply, Commercial, and Compliance organizations. The position will be responsible for utilizing and supervising outside counsel, as needed.

  • Monitor the external environment and activity for emerging risks to the animal health sector and its customers and proactively work with cross-functional teams and trade associations to assess and mitigate potential impact. Partner with Public Affairs and other business partners to develop strategies to ensure our customers continue to have the health solutions they need for their animals.

  • Support the development of internal policies & procedures, processes, and controls to ensure tracking and reporting of emerging regulations as well as work with the Zoetis Compliance team to assess risks and conduct internal training.

  • Draft, review, and negotiate life sciences contracts (e.g., clinical trials, licensing agreements, and services agreements) with vendors and strategic partners and provide day-to-day counsel and support to Veterinary Medicine Research and Development colleagues.

Education and Experience

  • A Juris Doctor Degree with admission to and current good standing with the bar of at least one state or the District of Columbia is required.

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience advising business partners in the animal health industry while working at a law firm, in a regulatory agency (e.g., FDA, USDA), or as an in-house lawyer on regulatory matters, including FDA and USDA policies and enforcement, is required.

  • Experience in a wide variety of areas of regulatory law for investigational as well as marketed animal health products.

  • Expertise advising on life sciences contract drafting, review, and negotiation.

Technical Skill Requirements

  • Demonstrate excellent strategic and analytical skills and the ability to help business partners find creative and compliant solutions to novel issues.

  • Be an exceptional communicator with strong presentation skills.

  • Have a positive attitude and the ability to work collaboratively on teams and with Zoetis Legal colleagues and business partners at all levels of seniority.

  • Be able to work independently in a fast-paced environment, with global teams located in multiple time zones.

  • Have strong contract drafting and negotiation experience.

  • Have superior organizational skills and the ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.

Physical Position Requirements

  • Hybrid working environment, with approximately 50% of time (2-3 work days per week) required on-site in Kalamazoo, MI or Parsippany, NJ headquarters.

  • Travel within the United States up to 10% of the time.

  • Work with global teams located in multiple time zones.
