Position: Research Study LPN, General Internal Medicine (Gout Study)

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Treat-to-Target Serum Urate versus Treat-to-Avoid Symptoms in Gout Trial (TRUST trial) will test two different treatment strategies for gout. The trial will require two part-time research LPNs who will each manage participants in one of the two treatment strategies. The LPNs will be responsible for following a treatment strategy algorithm that includes gout education, lifestyle counseling, and pharmacologic management. Training on the treatment strategy algorithm will be conducted before any patients are enrolled.

The position will require 40% effort for a minimum of 2-3 years. There will be a mixture of virtual visits and on-site visits at Boston Medical Center. The individual will be actively involved in subject recruitment, data collection, adverse event monitoring and reporting, and ensuring compliance with human subjects' regulations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Ensures that established protocols are implemented, maintains protocol integrity, monitors participant's status assuring safety, and plays a significant role in the education of clinical trial participants.
• Working with the PIs and the study coordinator, determines whether patients meet protocol inclusion criteria and assists with research subjects recruitment including obtaining informed consent.
• Establishes a therapeutic relationship with patients and families, providing the needed support to facilitate understanding of the disease process and the clinical trial, including information relative to study medication, study goals, and objectives.
• Reviews intake assessment with clinical team to confirm patients' medical conditions, readiness, and eligibility for study enrollment as a research participant. Establishes an appropriate plan of care for patient based on the study's guidelines.

OTHER

• Provides patient education regarding protocol participation and provides additional information to participants to ensure their understanding and adherence to the program.
• Responsible for scheduling of follow-up research study appointments for study participants which may require reminder phone calls, mailouts, or home visits.
• Orders, obtains (i.e., performs phlebotomy)and evaluates appropriate lab and diagnostic tests according to study protocols in order to determine the treatment and follow-up plan for each study subject.
• Documents adverse events and severe adverse events, and follows up with the research team and the participant's clinical team as necessary.

This position is funded by a 2 - 5 year grant. There may be opportunity beyond this grant funding for position integration into ongoing operations.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION:

• Graduate of an approved school of practical nursing.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:

• Current license in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
• CPR & BLS certified upon hire (or within first 90 days of employment).

EXPERIENCE:

• Requires a minimum of 2 years current experience in Ambulatory Office Setting. Experience in Adult Primary Care Medicine highly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

• Computer skills required. Familiarity with common computer programs such as Microsoft Word and Excel preferred.
• Ability to input data into electronic systems.
• Strong interpersonal skills, highly organized, detail-oriented and timely
• Strong patient communication and patient education skills. Attentive to detail and able to closely follow a clinical protocol.
