institution that offers support for faculty research. UNM is a designated
Hispanic Serving Institution and has a Carnegie Community Engagement
designation. New Mexico is a majority minority state and UNM's student
population is among the most diverse in the country.

The University of New Mexico is located in Albuquerque, New
Mexico, a city of 600,000 on the Rio Grande at an altitude of 5,200 feet.
Albuquerque's historical pluralism gives the city a fascinating mix in terms of
its arts, cuisine, languages, and values. The University of New Mexico is a
large, diverse state university with a faculty of over 3,000 serving
approximately 25,000 students.

The University of New Mexico's Art Education program is the
only visual art teacher Prek-12th grade licensures program in New
Mexico. The program offers BA and MA
degrees with or without a New Mexico art teaching license and is grounded in
interweaving theory and practice through experiential learning, artmaking as
inquiry, and cultivating interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches. The
foundation of the program is based on the understanding that art making is a
form of inquiry-a way to research, study, and comprehend diverse learners'
psychological, cultural, and social phenomena. Through coursework, field
experiences, and seminars, students cultivate a personal art pedagogy for
working with a broad range of learners, from young children through adults, within
diverse art education contexts. Students learn approaches for teaching
technical skills through diverse materials and processes, facilitating
conceptual and critical thinking, and developing learners' aesthetic awareness.
The art education program participates in the innovative Albuquerque Teacher
Residency Partnership (ATRP), to improve the preparation and retention of
effective, diverse teachers for high-need schools through a year long
apprenticeship.
