Position Summary

The Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is hiring a lab assistant for Dr. Islam's lab. His lab is dedicated to advancing research in biomaterials and fabrication techniques, with applications in biomedical engineering and material sciences. This is an exciting opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a cutting-edge research environment while developing essential laboratory skills.

What You'll Do

  • Analyze and utilize established scientific methods and protocols while ensuring high standards of efficiency and data quality across various research projects.
  • Perform routine laboratory tests and procedures for assigned ongoing research studies.
  • Set up, operate, maintain, and clean laboratory instruments and equipment.
  • Adhere to laboratory safety practices and comply with all safety protocols.
  • Develop a foundational understanding of the chemistry of biomaterials and fabrication techniques, including electrospinning.
  • Present research findings during lab meetings and at UNM research programs.

Minimum/Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate student at UNM (2nd year or junior preferred).
  • Major/Minor in Chemistry, Biology, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong interest in biomaterials research, laboratory techniques, and data analysis.
  • Good organizational skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a research team.
  • Interest in or experience with biomaterials chemistry, fabrication techniques (such as electrospinning), and material characterization is a plus.
  • Interest in or experience with scientific writing and research presentations is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn and follow laboratory safety protocols and best practices.
