Requisition ID req32345 Working Title Research Specialist/Lab Position Grade 11 Position Summary The Gerald May Department of Civil, Construction, & Environmental Engineering is seeking a research specialist to provide technical assistance. For the design, fabrication, collection, processing, and coordination of programming, debugging, compilation, data acquisition, samples, videos, images, and other visual aids. Also, in the specimens for the training and advancement of experiments related to Wireless Sensor Networks, Robots, Augmented Reality, Computer Vision, Databases, Human-Machine Interfaces for field deployments, Smart Management of Infrastructure, and Cyber-physical Systems (CPS). Works within established research protocol and under specific instructions as to method, process, and technique to perform or assist with routine tests, experiments, and/or procedures relevant to human-infrastructure interfaces, remotely automated robots and devices, sensors. The candidate must have experience working with undergraduate and graduate students in various departments (civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, structural engineering, computer science, mechatronics). Presenting weekly results to the PI on the area of robots, CPS, wireless sensors, and field deployments in different settings. Project description: * Develop data centers from the sensor to the decision maker, integrating new human-infrastructure interfaces * Development of low-cost efficient wireless intelligent sensors, field deployment, data portal, prototype deployments. * Development of Augmented Reality interfaces with low-cost sensors, data, robotics, inspections in the field. * The candidate will expand current capabilities integrating computer science, electrical engineering and civil engineering knowledge, also leading innovation in field deployment and integration for real-world, outdoor applications. * The candidate has experience working with international students at all levels, ranging from high school to visiting faculty, work with them in the laboratory, in the field, and with hands on experience with sensors, servers, and data analysis. * The candidate will be familiar with the management and design of a new human-machine interface laboratory, with cyber-physical capabilities, including sensors, machines, servers, and fabrication of new technologies. Familiarity with VICON cameras, raspberry Pis, Arduinos, lasers, sonars, cameras, and both hardware and software and how to manage various projects simultaneously. * Designs, programs, compiles, develops new code, debugs errors, test the compilation and verification of new applications, research data, samples, and/or specimens, following strict protocol and detailed instruction. * Performs or assists with routine data verification and quality control, ensuring data integrity and consistency with prescribed study protocol. * Trains other students in the programming, debugging, compilation, testing, design and architecture development of new systems including wireless sensor networks with Civil Engineering, and other outdoor applications such as railroads and other transportation systems (Tramway, bridges, energy facilities). * Performs or assists with the execution of routine research protocol, such as interviewing, testing, and/or scientific procedures. * Discusses demonstrations, connection of data and structures, connection of AR with national laboratories priorities. Summarizes findings and report results weekly to the PI. * Performs and/or assists with routine data analysis and interpretation, as specifically assigned; may utilize specialized analytical equipment and/or instrumentation or specified statistical data analysis programs and software. * Assists in the setup, operation, and maintenance of research equipment, instrumentation, and/or facilities, as specifically instructed. * Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards. * May lead, train, guide, and/or allocate work to student employees, research assistants, and/or other research support personnel on specific aspects of research procedure, as appropriate to the role. * Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Conditions of Employment Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED; at least 7 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. Preferred Qualifications * 10 months of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities which include sensors, vibrations, human-infrastructure interface, and training others on hardware, software, programming. * Experience working with postdoctoral associates, PhD students, Masters students, Undergraduate students, and a diverse group, with proven record of mentoring from postdoctoral students to high school students. * Familiarity with UNM Centers, Laboratories, and facilities that can enhance the training of the Undergraduates and Graduate students. * Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. More specifically, a degree in Computer Science from Community College Education with special training on AR and Unity. * Proven ability to prepare power point presentations summarizing results weekly. * Industry experience in civil engineering, especially in construction and structural applications. * Experience working on tight schedule, weekly presentations on PPT to a diverse audience, completing deadlines, receiving feedback and implementing client's input for the success of the project.
