Position Summary

The Education & Outreach Manager (Director) is responsible for the strategic planning, implementation, and oversight of education projects/community outreach activities as well as the comprehensive day-to-day administration/management of the UNM STEM-H Center's operations.

About the UNM STEM-H Center Originally established in 1959 as the NWNM Science & Engineering Fair, the UNM STEM-H Center has grown substantially and is a distinguished and long-standing entity at the University of New Mexico. The STEM-H Center is supported jointly by the UNM Office for Research (main campus) and the UNM Health Sciences Office for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion. Our mission-based work is focused on:

  • Flagship Pre-College STEM Research Competitions
  • Kupono Learning Lab (in-person & online professional development for K-12 research teachers and pre-college student researchers)
  • Policy & Advocacy Engagement
  • Scientific Equipment Lending & STEM Curriculum Resource Center
  • Development & Maintenance of Strategic Partnerships
  • Continuing to be a leader in effective, successful, fiscally responsible STEM Competition Management
  • Technical Assistance/Consulting for Other Similar Organizations

Duties and Responsibilities Including Essential Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Leadership & Management

  • Leadership and Management Skills, Program Management Experience, Strong Team & Volunteer Management Experience, Strategic Planning Expertise, Expertise in Budget Development & Management, Strong Fundraising & Grant Writing Experience

Education & Outreach

  • Experienced in STEM Education & Curriculum Development for Diverse Audiences, Demonstrated expertise in Outreach & Community Engagement (diverse communities & stakeholders), Expert in Public Speaking & Training Facilitation, Working With Pre-College Students, Extensive Professional Network, Program Recruitment

Communication & Advocacy

  • Excellent Communication Skills (written, verbal, complex situations), Advocacy & Public Relations Expertise

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

  • Commitment to Diversity, Cultural Competency & Humility Technology
  • Technology Proficiency (educational technologies, STEM tools, online LMS's, virtual engagement methods, skilled in M365 and preferably has experience with systems like DataClassroom, zFairs, Smartsheet,etc.), Data Analysis & Reporting Skills, Experience with Program Evaluation Methods
  • Strong interpersonal and communication
    skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of
    constituencies in a diverse community.

Conditions of Employment

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.



Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Degree in Education, STEM, or a Related Field Master's or Doctorate in a relevant field (e.g., Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, Education, Public Policy, or Nonprofit Management) is preferred.
  • Familiarity w/ the UNM STEM-H Center including competition programs, professional development, online resources, policy/advocacy work, etc.
  • Experience in STEM academic competition management (local, regional, state)
