HDR Engineering Inc. needs motivated archaeological crew chiefs for the 2025 field season in Alaska (May - October). The position may require pedestrian survey and/or archaeological monitoring; however, the candidate should expect to spend the majority of his or her time conducting data recovery. This is a seasonal part-time position based out of the HDR office in Anchorage, Alaska. The candidate must meet the Secretary of Interior (SOI)-qualifications as an Archaeologist. The successful candidate will lead archaeological field crews in pedestrian survey and data recovery efforts. Candidates should be familiar with: fieldwork planning, execution, and documentation; quality control review processes; and interpretation and processing of field data. Archaeological crew chiefs are required to perform the following tasks in the field while working under supervision of the Field Director: * Show up to work each day on-time and prepared. * Ensure the application of safe work practices by the field crew. * Provide guidance and leadership to field crew in areas of specialty, such as faunal and/or lithics analysis. * Oversee and coordinate an archaeological field crew in locating, collecting, recording and interpreting data for archaeological survey and excavation. * Convey client needs and project objectives to field crew. * Dig shovel test pits and excavation units. * Collect and record archaeological data, artifacts, and other materials for subsequent reporting, analysis, and interpretation. * Hike over rugged terrain for 8 - 10 hours a day while carrying necessary field equipment. * Conduct archaeological survey. * Use GPS units for navigation and recording geospatial data. * Monitor construction activities for presence of cultural resources. * Ensure timely completion of fieldwork and project reports. * Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. Working Conditions and Physical Effort * Significant physical work is a primary part of this job. If hired, the successful applicant will be required to conduct heavy physical work, including lifting, pushing, or pulling objects up to 50 pounds. * Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks, which will require following basic safety precautions. * Work may involve exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, and/or loud noises. * Work requires hiking and working in rugged terrain.
