Inova Cornwall Forensic Assessment and Consultation Teams (FACT) is looking for a dedicated Forensic Nurse Examiner to join the team. This role will be PRN; department hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m. M-Su. Must be able to work 48 hours every 8-week scheduling period. Shifts range from 6-12 hours - self-scheduling.

Forensic Nurse Examiner Job Responsibilities:



  • Performs a forensic medical assessment, collects appropriate forensic evidence, provides psychological support, and offers referrals for follow-up and counseling.
  • Testifies in the court system as an expert in the field of sexual assault and physical violence.
  • Requires travel to other jurisdictions/ facilities as warranted including other medical facilities, courts and detention center environments.
  • Provides knowledgeable and caring clinical practice and care coordination through an understanding of patient, family, nurse, and healthcare delivery teams.
  • Conducts all patient care in a patient and family-centered manner. Integrates knowledge, skills, and experiences to meet the needs of patients and families throughout the continuum, to include patient and family education.
  • Serves as an empowering body to influence patient empowerment, and successful outcomes of financial and clinical quality, through relationships and access-based knowledge.
  • Ensures improvements in practice settings by assuming responsibility for self-development in life-long learning.


Forensic Nurse Examiner Additional Requirements:



  • Orientation: Self-scheduling. New PRN nurses who can dedicate 2-3 shifts per week during orientation period are able to be most successful and efficient in learning the FNE process. New FNE nurses are encouraged to start off with dayshifts in our Dunn Loring location, where they can see more cases and be more resourced with preceptors and staff.
  • Work schedule: PRN; department hours are 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 a.m. M-Su. Must be able to work 48 hours every 8-week scheduling period. Shifts range from 6-12 hours - self-scheduling.
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree Nursing or Associate's Degree. If RN has an Associate's Degree, within 2 years of date of hire, they must meet with their nurse leader and conduct the following: 1.) Identify which accredited school they plan to attend 2.) Provide a written plan with anticipated BSN completion date 3.) Submit a review of transcripts from the school indicating the required pre-requisites and timeline for taking the courses 4.) Complete BSN within 5 years of start date
  • Experience: Minimum of 6 months of Registered Nurse clinical experience.
  • Certification: BLS from AHA for Healthcare Provider certification required; Licensed or eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Registered Nurse or an active multi-state Registered Nurse license.
  • Other: Strong verbal and written communication skills; Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to display a caring demeanor toward others. Proficient computer skills required


Forensic Nurse Examiner Preferred Qualifications:



  • Education: BSN from an accredited school of nursing
  • Experience: Prior experience in forensic nursing;
  • Certification: RN licensed in the state of VA. Completion of accredited SANE adult & pediatric course upon start. Completion of accredited SANE courses through IAFN within 30 days of start or transfer. Both Adult & Pediatric course completion required.
