Physician for acute care surgery and medical director.
We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Medical Director to lead and manage the Trauma and Acute Care Surgery service at Wentworth-Douglass Hospital. This leadership role will be approximately 85% clinical and 15% administrative. The successful candidate will manage a team of surgeons and advanced practice providers (APPs), ensure high-quality patient care, and oversee the development of educational programs, clinical reviews, policies, protocols, and guidelines in alignment with ACS Level III Trauma Center requirements. The role involves a majority of emergency general surgery (~80%) with a smaller but critical focus on trauma patient management (~20%). This position requires an individual who is fully competent in managing both emergency general surgery and trauma patients and is passionate about education, team leadership, and advancing clinical care. Qualifications:
- Board Certification or Board Eligibility in General Surgery (required)
- Trauma ATLS certification and proficiency in trauma management (required).
- Proficiency in Emergency General Surgery: Must be fully competent in managing emergency general surgery cases, including trauma, abdominal surgery, gastrointestinal surgeries, etc.
- Trauma fellowship training is not mandatory if there is demonstrated proficiency and experience in trauma care.
- Strong collaborative and leadership skills and experience in managing a team of surgeons and APPs.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with a variety of stakeholders.
- Strong background in developing and implementing clinical protocols, educational initiatives, and quality improvement projects.
- Commitment to maintaining high clinical standards and fostering a culture of patient safety and continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in managing ACS Level III Trauma Center protocols and guidelines.
- Experience in trauma center accreditation processes and quality assurance activities.
Key Responsibilities: Clinical (~85% or 12 TACS shifts/4 weeks)
- Lead and provide direct patient care in trauma and acute care surgery, with an emphasis on emergency general surgery.
- Perform major surgeries, including emergency general surgery cases, trauma resuscitations, and surgeries in line with ACS Level III Trauma Center standards.
- Provide trauma and emergency general surgery consultation and management for inpatient and emergency department patients.
- Supervise, mentor, and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, APPs, and nursing staff to deliver exceptional care.
- Participate in trauma rounds, multidisciplinary team meetings, and case reviews to ensure high-quality care.
- Maintain proficiency in trauma management, as outlined in ACS guidelines, and perform trauma surgeries when needed.
- Participate in after-hours call rotation for trauma and emergency general surgery cases.
Administrative (~15% or 6 admin hours per week, separate from clinical role)
- Create and manage physician work schedules and arrange per diem support as needed.
- Lead the development and implementation of trauma and emergency general surgery education programs for the medical team.
- Develop and regularly review clinical policies, protocols, and guidelines for trauma and emergency general surgery, ensuring compliance with ACS Level III standards and hospital regulations.
- Oversee the performance evaluation of surgeons and APPs, providing constructive feedback and fostering an environment of continuous improvement.
- Work with hospital leadership to assess and address clinical and operational needs within the trauma and acute care surgery department.
- Contribute to the planning and execution of departmental strategic goals and initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with trauma-related regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and quality improvement initiatives.
