Essential Functions |
This position serves the
Southwest Alabama Agronomic Crops Program, covering
Baldwin, Butler, Clarke, Conecuh, Escambia, Mobile, Monroe, and Washington counties.
As an
Extension Agent (EA), you will play a key role in supporting commercial row crop producers and stakeholders by delivering cutting-edge, research-based insights. Your work will focus on enhancing the
sustainability and profitability of Alabama's row crop industry while promoting
environmentally responsible agronomic practices.
Key responsibilities include:
- Designing, implementing, and evaluating educational programs that address the needs of row crop producers in the region.
- Collaborating with local stakeholders, advisory groups, and industry experts to ensure impactful and relevant programming.
- Providing expertise on row crop production, including cotton, soybeans, field corn, small grains, and other key crops in the region.
- Utilizing innovative agricultural technologies and best management practices to improve crop production efficiency and sustainability.
- Conducting on-farm demonstrations, field trials, and workshops to extend practical, research-backed knowledge to producers.
- Developing educational resources such as fact sheets, newsletters, and online content to disseminate timely information.
- Assisting producers in adopting integrated pest management, precision agriculture, soil health strategies, and other agronomic advancements.
- Seeking funding opportunities through grants, sponsorships, and partnerships to enhance program reach and effectiveness.
- Documenting program impact through data collection, reporting, and continuous evaluation for improvement.
This role requires strong communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills to effectively serve Alabama's agricultural community. |
Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications |
Level 1: Bachelor's degree and 0 years of experience.
Level 2: Bachelor's degree and 4 years of experience or Master's degree and 2 years of experience.
Level 3: Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience or Master's degree and 6 years of experience.
Level 4: Bachelor's degree and 12 years of experience or Master's degree and 10 years of experience.
Focus of Education: Discipline related to extension programming.
Focus of Experience: Experience implementing, managing, or delivering educational programs in a relevant discipline, including formal and/or informal teaching methods.
This position involves regular travel to fulfill Extension responsibilities, and access to reliable transportation is essential. |
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications
Minimum Skills and Abilities |
- Basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular field of specialization.
- Ability to work with youth and adult learners, understand generational differences, and appreciate the nuances of a complex organization.
- Ability and willingness to travel extensively throughout assigned regions and operate a motor vehicle for university business.
- Proficiency in planning and executing educational programs focused on agronomic row crops and pest management practices in row crop production.
- Competence in using Microsoft Word, Internet Explorer, Excel, and other relevant software programs.
- Strong communication skills, teamwork abilities, and readiness to engage in diverse outreach methods for program delivery.

- Bachelor's degree in Agronomy or Plant Sciences with a minimum of one year of relevant experience, or a preferred Master's degree from an accredited institution in a related field.
- Preference will be given to candidates with experience in precision agriculture, as well as proficiency in GIS, GPS, and remote-sensing applications in agriculture.
