Job Summary
Independent of supervision in a hospital setting, as a significant part of daily duties, provide intense moment-to-moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients. Under general supervision of the Community and Specialties Manager, work with supervisors and faculty to assess staff training needs, develop training protocols, provide staff training, manage and update training documentation and evaluate staff on work performance. In conjunction with supervisors and faculty, assess service needs including staffing levels, work schedules and equipment. Research and order new supplies and equipment. Work in a variety of areas as directed, with non-domestic species of animals including birds, reptiles, exotic mammals and wildlife. Provide para-veterinary technical, anesthesia and nursing support for a variety of invasive, non-invasive and diagnostic procedures. Provide instruction to, staff, students and clinicians in proper techniques for restraint and handling of patients, nursing care, administering treatments and obtaining a variety of diagnostic samples. Provide equipment and facility stocking, cleaning and maintenance. RECRUITMENT PERIOD ONE MONTH: Applicants will be screened after two weeks; and then on a weekly basis. - Current California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) License.
- No minimum education requirement.
- Experience providing intense moment to moment monitoring and reassessment of emergent, critically ill, or anesthetized patients.
- Experience supervising and evaluating daily activities of staff, recognizing and assessing staff training needs, written evaluations, maintain safety training, schedules, and providing comprehensive training in a clinical veterinary setting.
- Experience communicating with a diverse group of people including clients, clinicians, referring veterinarians, students, and staff in an accurate, professional and collegial manner. Experience working independently or as part of a team to coordinate, facilitate, set up equipment and supplies, troubleshoot and anticipate needs for activities in assigned areas in an accurate, efficient and timely manner.
- Experience administering a variety of prescribed anesthetic, peri-anesthetic drugs, inducing and maintaining anesthesia, using anesthetic delivery, support, and monitoring equipment, assessing patient status and independently responding in patients of multiple species.
- Experience calculating and administering dosages of medications, handle restrain all patients for transport ,fluids and diets & administering medications/therapies via multiple routes i.e. PO, IV, IM, SC and topical to multiple species.
- Ability to assist in non-terminal and terminal laboratory procedures for the purposes of teaching students and residents; adhering to IACUC protocols.
Preferred Qualifications
- Veterinary Technician Specialty (VTS) Certification
- Experience with endoscopic, celioscopic ,surgical, invasive and non-invasive procedures - including supplies and equipment performed by the CAPE service. Experience taking diagnostic radiographs.
- Experience in small mammal and exotic animal dentistry, techniques, supplies and equipment with knowledge of normal behavior, anatomy and physiology of multiple species ( companion exotic, small mammal, wildlife) with the experience to obtain a variety of biological samples from small mammal and companion exotic, wildlife patients.
