Position Title: Associate Director, Graduate Advising Department Name: University Advising Center Position Reports To: Associate Dean of Students FLSA STATUS: Salaried Salary Range: $70,000-$75,000 Benefits: The University's comprehensive benefits program
Days & Hours: Monday through Friday, 37.5 hours per week. Standard work schedule is 9:00 am to 5:30 PM, may be adjusted. Flexible schedule may require evening and weekend hours during peak periods. BASIC FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF JOB: The Associate Director, Graduate Advising will oversee a team of advisors, provide guidance to students, collaborate with staff and faculty to enact retention strategies, participate in campus-wide events, and serve as an integral part of the department's mission and student's professional and academic growth. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Provide leadership to professional advisors and student assistants. This involves hiring, training, motivating, and managing so that the group performs at the highest level possible. Provide and coordinate required training, staff development, and team building activities to ensure optimal performance of advising team.
- Manage the advisors as they advise students on all academic program requirements, filling in when needed.
- Research and resolve issues or refer students to department or individual, as appropriate.
- Build a partnership with a small caseload of advisees.
- Clarify their personal, academic, and career goals and articulate expectations of advisor-advisee relationship.
- Develop a path to degree completion and implement goal-setting strategies
- Conduct appointments via web-conference and phone; Manage communications with advisees via email and text
- Coach students regarding degree options and academic standing, continuously monitoring their success
- Manage electronic processes associated with supporting student enrollment and advising, including academic records system in Colleague and Salesforce.
- Responsible for identifying retention challenges and leading discussions with the advising team and associate dean around strategies to improve retention.
- Manage the planning, development, and implementation of the advising communication plan for all graduate students.
- Consult with associate dean regarding continuing student profiles, at-risk enrollment behaviors and required strategies for continuous improvement in enrollment and academic process.
- Develop reports, analyses, and surveys for associate dean.
- Assist with Division of Student Success both in-person and online events, including but not limited to Orientation and Commencement.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education requirement:
- Master's degree in counseling, student affairs, academic advising, or similar (foreign equivalent or higher degree) or equivalent in a related field.
- Years of experience:
- 3 to 5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge of:
- Experience working in college advising; ideally experience in advising online programs, holistic advising/student development, student assistance, support of at-risk students.
- Direct job-related requirements:
- Experience with supervising staff.
- Good skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and computerized database systems.
- Skills and abilities:
- Excellent initiative and organizational skills with ability to work both autonomously and in a team.
- Proven time management skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with strong interpersonal skills and customer-service orientation.
- Ability and willingness to work with students from diverse political/socioeconomic/cultural backgrounds and a wide range of physical and academic abilities.
