Description of primary duties and responsibilities: |
Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit
The Division of Facilities Management functions to design, construct, maintain and operate the University's physical facilities. The number one objective of the department is to provide and maintain facilities that will enhance and support the mission and academic goals of the University. Our approach is centered upon providing a superior level of customer service.
Primary Purpose of Position
The primary purpose of the Facility Maintenance Technician-Locksmith is to provide locksmithing services for the camps community. The locksmith will provide services for doors, file cabinets, desks, and other locking devices. The locksmith under the direction of the lock shop supervisor has the sole authority to issue keys, re-key and/or change locks for the University.' This position will work with a computer-based software in the design & layout of complex master key systems. This position will export codes to automated key cutters and
CNC machines for the purpose of cutting and engraving keys. This position enters personal and department information into the facilities management database. Duties include but not limited to, master keying all cylinder types including desk and padlocks, duplicating & cutting keys, repairing and installing door, cabinet, and file cabinet locks. The locksmiths are responsible for installing and maintaining critical systems including but not limited to, Access Control and Electronic Door Entry. |
Description of Work Continued: |
Knowledge-Technical - 60%
- Servicing and installing all door hardware, including closures, mortise, cylindrical locking hardware, and fire rated exit devices.
- Understanding and knowledge of hardware manufacturer installation specifications and guidelines
- Employee reviews work orders and determines priority when completing requested tasks.
- Orders parts and supplies and maintains inventory records.
- Designs master key systems which include sub-master and single keys and maintains records.
- Understanding of NFPA 101 and NFPA 80 life safety and fire codes, and the ability to locate and research needed materials associated with job from vendor source.
- Working knowledge in key bittings array for small format master keying, pinning of cores, ability to research and collect information pertaining to customer needs.
- Disassembles locks such as padlocks, door locks, and repairs or replaces worn tumblers, springs, and other parts.
- Operates key-cutting machines.
- Ability to apply and interpret technical knowledge to resolve unique or overly complex situations.
- Ability to perform routine tasks completely and accurately.
- Estimate cost of labor materials for work orders; obtain competitive prices for equipment and supplies needed for the department.
- Ensure work orders are closed in a timely manner.
- Utilize key cutting machines, drills, saws, buffers and grinders, key gauges, and locksmith tools.
- Adds and updates data in the Key Tracking Software program used by the University.
- Assist in the installation of electronic and other special locking systems for university buildings and facilities; perform complex repairs and update records as required.
- Open a locked door without a key.
- Performs installation, maintenance, and repair on hardware components of the campus wide electronic access and monitoring systems.
- Troubleshoot access control hardware failures and complete repairs.
- Perform regularly scheduled maintenance on access control systems.
- Assists with the development of emergency response protocols as it relates to access control.
- Installs, services, and maintains electric strikes, magna locks, card readers, transmitter wall switches, automatic door opener and controls, panic bars, and door closers.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Customer Service - 30%
- Anticipate customer needs, address, and resolve concerns promptly and respectfully.
- Monitor the process to ensure customers are well satisfied.
- Recognize how work activities and behavior impact clients and the University.
- Demonstrate ability to make recommendations resulting in improved processes within funding constraints.
- Coordinates with other department supervisors and staff when jobs overlap to ensure availability of areas to be maintained to minimize hindrance to ongoing operations.

Safety and Health Compliance - 10%
- Use of power and hand tools in a safe manner. Guards and other safety devices are kept in good repair and in place.
- Employees are briefed on the use of safety equipment. Unsafe conditions are corrected or reported.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements: |
High school diploma or equivalent and two years of experience in trade(s) areas assigned; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
A valid driver's license. Must have and maintain an acceptable driving record, preferably five or more years of driving experience with no more than one minor at fault accident or violation in the past three years. |

Provides technical assistance to others by troubleshooting standard facilities maintenance issues and determining their cause. Mentor's other technicians.
Communication- Communicates information to individuals or groups; delivers presentations suited to the characteristics and needs of the audience. Clearly and concisely conveys written information orally or in writing to individuals or groups to ensure that they understand the information and the message. Listens and responds appropriately to others.
Problem Solving- Identifies facilities-related maintenance problems that require in-depth analysis and identifies options for solving those problems. Solve unusual facility maintenance problems that require the application of journey level trades knowledge and determine the most effective and efficient course of action. Gathers and analyzes/interprets information to better understand the nature of the problem. May seek input from subordinates, peers, and/or managers in the decision-making process in order to solve the problem. Evaluates options and chooses appropriate action by considering potential outcomes. Makes sure that problem is appropriately addressed.
Attention to Detail- Ensures all work meets and/or exceeds applicable codes and standards. Checks and re-checks work prior to, during, and after completion. Ensures that all parts of a project/task are completed. Uses appropriate record keeping methods.
Coordination-Work- Determines project/assignment by breaking them down into tasks. Sets objectives and prioritizes activities and tasks, adjusts priorities when appropriate. Takes advantage of available resources (personnel, processes, departments, and tools) to complete work efficiently. Anticipates obstacles/roadblocks and prepares alternative plans to ensure timely task accomplishment. Uses time effectively and does not let distractions interfere with completion of the job/project.
Safety and Health Compliance- Identifies and resolves potential safety problems and unsafe work practices. Demonstrates to employees and others safe ways to perform job tasks or the use of equipment. Informs supervisor of unusual safety concerns and makes recommendations for resolution. Determines appropriate protective equipment based on established standards. Preferred Qualifications: |
- Institutional locksmith Association membership.
- Certified Journey Level certification and/or Fire Door Inspector
- certification, but not contingent for position.
- Certification in access control system design and installation
- 5 years of progressive Building Trades experience at the Journeyman level.
- 3+ years locksmith experience
