Position Summary |
The Division of Infectious Diseases (ID) at the
UNC Chapel Hill School of Medicine is seeking a qualified, general ID physician to join our academic program. This open rank/open track position is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, engaged physician to become a part of our expanding clinical practice at
UNC Medical Center. This position also offers the possibility of research, teaching, and antimicrobial stewardship opportunities, based on interest and experience.
Responsibilities:
General ID consultations at
UNC Medical Center and
UNC Hospitals' Hillsborough Campus, with an average census of approximately 15-20 adult medical, surgical, and/or behavioral health inpatients;
Participation with ambulatory and inpatient 'e-consult' and/or tele-ID consult requests;
Occasional supervision of medical students, residents, and fellows in inpatient and ambulatory settings;
Assisting clinical leadership with quality improvement efforts for our inpatient consultation services;
Participation in weekly ID case conferences and grand rounds.

UNC Medical Center is a 905-bed, tertiary/quaternary-care facility comprising NC Memorial Hospital (adult med/surg), NC Children's Hospital, NC Women's Hospital, NC Neurosciences Hospital, and NC Cancer Hospital. In spring 2024, a state-of-the-art Surgical Tower will open on the same campus, expanding the number of surgical observation, step-down, and Intensive Care Unit (
ICU)-rated beds at our facility by 56%.
UNC Hospitals Hillsborough Campus, located approximately 20 minutes away from
UNC Medical Center by car, has an additional 163 medical/surgical beds, including dedicated acute inpatient rehabilitation floors and a small, open
ICU.
UNC Hillsborough is considered part of
UNC Medical Center.
Ambulatory sessions take place exclusively in the ID Clinic at
UNC Eastowne Medical Office Building, a 6-story facility that opened in April 2021. Located a short drive from
UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill, the building has laboratory, radiology, and infusion services co-located on site. The ID Clinic is home to a busy
OPAT program as well as comprehensive adult
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) care services funded through the Ryan White
HIV/
AIDS Program.
The Division is home to more than 60 clinical and research faculty, many of whom have joint appointments in UNC's schools of pharmacy and public health. We have had an
ACGME-accredited fellowship program since 1980, with a mission of training the next generation of clinicians, public health practitioners, and investigators in the field. Although most of the Division's research activities center around
HIV treatment and prevention, we also have a highly esteemed tropical medicine and malariology group and global experts in coronavirus research, infection prevention and hospital epidemiology, and sexually transmitted infections.
Chapel Hill is a quintessential college town located in central North Carolina, roughly equidistant from Durham, a historic heart of Black culture in the state, and Raleigh, the state capital. These three cities constitute the 'Triangle,' a rapidly growing area of the US with excellent public and private grade schools, a vibrant cultural and arts community, world-class higher education, a highly rated international airport with regular flights to Canada and Europe, and both mountains and beaches within several hours' drive. The Research Triangle Park (
RTP), located between Durham and Raleigh, has long been a draw for biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and computer science companies which benefit from access to young, highly trained graduates from area universities. The Triangle area is a great place to live and work! |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Medical degree (MD, DO, or equivalent)
Completion of an
ACGME-accredited fellowship in ID (by anticipated start date)
Board certified or board eligible in ID
Eligibility for medical licensure in NC |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Interest in the management of perioperative infections is highly desirable
Familiarity with the Epic
EMR is desirable
Familiarity with or experience leading quality improvement initiatives is desirable
Experience with inpatient telemedicine services is desirable
Fluency in Spanish is helpful, but not required |
