The Salvation Army's Wisconsin and Upper Michigan Division is located in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. The division is home to 26 Worship and Community Centers (Corps), 67 service extension units, a camp, as well as multiple homeless shelters, thrift stores and food pantries. Service extension units are branches of The Salvation Army in communities where Corps are not located but service is provided by committees of volunteers. As a whole, our organization is made up of thousands of officers, soldiers, adherents, employees, volunteers and other individuals all working together to bring the Gospel of Jesus Christ to all people, as well as working to meet the physical needs of those less fortunate. The Executive Director of Development will provide leadership, direction, and coordination to all the Development Department's staff for the Wisconsin and Upper Michigan (WUM) Division including corps and non-corps service units to meet the Division's annual budget contribution and relationship goals. Ensures strategic and operational plans are developed and successfully implemented in an integrated and synchronized manner for all areas of Fundraising, Marketing, and Communications to support the whole philanthropic mission of The Salvation Army (TSA). Builds and maintains positive relationships with a wide range of contacts both within and outside TSA as well as represents the WUM Division territorially and nationally in Development and Communication matters in cooperation with the Divisional Commander. Serves as a member of the Divisional Finance Board and Advisory Board and as a representative of TSA and its mission in the broader constituency within and outside the organization.

About the role:



  • Provides leadership, direction and management oversight for the development, communications, and volunteer services functions for the WUM Division.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of strategic, long-term and operational plans for all areas of fundraising, marketing, and community relations in partnership with divisional leadership to ensure an integrated and synchronized approach to the philanthropic mission of the WUM Division.
  • Facilitates education and communications with the Division regarding development and communications activities, including utilizing the support and expertise of volunteers.
  • Provides fundraising/public relations counsel to divisional corps officers, department leaders, and appropriate others regarding capital and annual campaigns, feasibility studies, board development, special events, direct mail, strategic planning and donor relations including cultivation and recognition activities.
  • Plans and directs fundraising initiatives within the division/region in collaboration with the Divisional Commander, Advisory Board and other Territorial leaders as to meet or exceed the division's financial, marketing, resources development, and communications objectives.
  • Develops and acquires research data, through surveys and feasibility studies, which provides directional guidance for fundraising initiatives within the Division.
  • Prepares annual budgets for the Division's entire Development Department; oversees preparation of annual budgets for each area of Development; regularly monitors actuals versus planned budget revenues. Approves departmental expense reports.
  • Trains and engages Advisory Board members so they can be effective participants in fundraising and communications within their respective communities.
  • Provides supervision and mentoring to development staff; provides a clear vision, effective communications and leadership to create a team environment dedicated to the objectives of the department and the Division.
  • Works with development department managers and THQ leadership to develop measurable metrics to drive and evaluate desired performance.
  • Works with direct reports to identify and address individual as well as departmental development needs; provides for and encourages professional development and training as needed, and conducts annual performance reviews with each direct report; documents performance including areas for improvement; shares and discusses review with each direct report.
  • Functions as the divisional liaison to THQ leadership and staff for all areas related to Development, Community Relations, Capital Campaigns, and National Corporate Campaign initiatives.
  • Serves as the point person and subject matter expert for all matters pertaining to Development for the Division and an effective spokesperson for TSA locally and divisionally.
  • Maintains accurate records and reports for fundraising results for the Division.
  • Monitors and reviews progress on Development goals with department leaders in the Division; meets regularly with Development staff to ensure goals are achieved.
  • Prepares and provides timely and constructive feedback, coaching and direction to help assure each Development department leader meets or exceeds their performance goals and expectations.
  • Assists in identifying, recruiting, and selecting qualified development staff throughout the Division.
  • Fosters and maintains a portfolio of major donors (e.g., Advisory Board members) and prospects for major and planned gifts within the Division/Region.


Experience, Education and Knowledge:



  • Bachelor's degree in non-profit management, fund development, marketing, business administration, public relations or other related fields; advanced degree is desirable.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the requisite knowledge and abilities to successfully lead and manage a Development Department and its staff to effectively engage in fundraising activities at a Divisional level may be considered.
  • Five or more years of successful Development and supervisory experience in a key leadership role in a non-profit, charitable organization, preferably a faith-based organization, including fundraising areas such as major gifts, planned giving, capital campaigns, direct mail, and government/foundation grants.
  • Experience, familiarity, and/or ability to work in a complex non-profit organization with many departments, programs and fundraising priorities.


Certifications:



  • Valid Wisconsin driver's license with clearance to drive from TSA insurance.
  • Advanced Development credentials, recognition or achievements are expected; e.g. Association of Fund-Raising Executives (AFE) Certification or Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE).
