Financial Counselor Senior - Adult Outpatient Pavilion

The Financial Counselor Senior performs all aspects of the Financial Counselor position, demonstrating strong customer service while handling all business functions, including patient registration, insurance verification, patient interviews, assessment of patient eligibility for financial assistance programs, creation and communication of patient estimates and payment arrangements, and payment collection. The Financial Counselor Senior acts as a liaison between the patient/guarantor and the Revenue Cycle programs/departments. In addition, the Financial Counselor Senior directly supports the supervisor with advanced tasks and reporting, mentorship and orientation of colleagues within the Patient Access arena and providing leadership to team members related to all aspects of Financial Counselor expectations and processes.

Essential Job functions:

  • Performs all aspects of the Financial Counselor position, including:

  • Handling all business functions including registering patients by securing appropriate patient and insurance information; ensuring that registration data is correct and accurate; validating insurance eligibility; collecting co-payments; and entering information into appropriate systems.

  • Interviewing patients/guarantors to obtain all necessary account information, to include assessment of eligibility for financial assistance, Medicaid referral services, Affordable Care Act enrollment, and Governor Access Plan.

  • Explaining process and forms to patient/guarantor and obtaining patient/guarantor signatures on required financial forms.

  • Creating estimates, establishing payment arrangements, and collecting payments.

  • Verifying all insurance and obtaining pre-certification/authorization.

Directly supports the supervisor in completing multiple administrative responsibilities to include task schedule of financial counselors, PAR reporting to include POS collections and productivity, and compiling additional data such as floor visits.

Effectively works within the health system's Revenue Cycle software, assists team members in working accounts, and escalates accounts to leadership as appropriate.

Responsible for orienting and training new hires to service area.

Notifies supervisor, immediately, of issues involving violation of VCUHS policies or procedures.

Ensures responsibility and visible commitment of diversity equity and inclusion strategy, programs, and initiatives through collaboration and implementation of initiatives across the health system.

Performs other duties as assigned and/or participates in special projects to support the mission of VCU and VCUHS. Provides assistance to team members. Accepts alternate assignments, as required graciously.

Required Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Preferred Education:

Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Healthcare Administration or closely related field from an accredited program

Minimum Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

Minimum of one (1) year of Financial Counselor experience or two (2) years of Patient Access experience.

Other Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

Ability to problem solve and take appropriate action when necessary.

Ability to function in a self-directed manner to accomplish routine activities.

Proven customer service skills.
