Founded in 1974, Massey was among the earliest cancer centers designated by the National Cancer Institute (NCI). It is the only cancer center in the Richmond metropolitan region and one of only two NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the state, placing it among the top 4 percent of cancer centers in the country.
The Integrated Health Cosmetician and Stylist will provide exceptional supportive care services for adult cancer patients through support of Massey's Magical Wig Salon, the Massey Integrative Health program, and the Linen-Powell Patient Resource Library and Lois Trani Resource Center. Where applicable, this extends to the patient's family and caregivers. Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to perform Cosmetology services Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia to perform Cosmetology services Experience REQUIRED: Fitting and styling (including trimming) of wigs, shaving heads, knowledge of skin care and makeup products, application, and instruction within the framework of infection prevention. Strong customer service skills with experience working within a hospital (inpatient and outpatient)setting. Experience PREFERRED: In addition to required experience, grant writing, marketing, and program development. Demonstrated proficiency with Internet based research, network, and online file maintenance and management. Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology Education/training REQUIRED: Graduate of licensed cosmetology program approved by the Virginia Department of Education and successfully pass cosmetology licensing examination. Per Code of Virginia Title 54.1, any person completing a cosmetology training program that is substantially equivalent to the Virginia program but is outside of the Commonwealth of Virginia must submit to the board documentation of the successful completion of 1,500 hours of training to be eligible for examination. Education/training PREFERRED: Bachelor's degree in healthcare, business, management, finance, mass communication or related field is strongly preferred. In addition to required education/training, proficiency with computer applications, including but not limited to: Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Zoom technology. Independent action(s) required: Fitting and styling (including trimming) of wigs, shaving heads, scarf styling techniques, knowledge of skin care and, makeup products, application, and instruction, including individual and group consultations. Provide patients, family members, caregivers, and clinical staff with evidence-based health information about cancer, treatment options, nutrition, clinical trials, side effects, long term survivorship, and integrative health within the, boundaries of a non-clinical position. Develop a strong salon program with new marketing, expanded grant opportunities and new programs for patients. Develop a strong skincare and makeup program with new marketing, expanded grant opportunities, and new programs for patients. Demonstrated ability to work independently to foresee and anticipate program issues and to respond to needs proactively. Demonstrate strong customer service skills. Demonstrate professionalism to work with a wide range of wig salon clients, family members, and donors including Massey Cancer Center Board members, healthcare teams of all clinical levels, and patients from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Demonstrate excellent written and communication skills. Demonstrate ability to multi-task and prioritize autonomously. Demonstrate independent judgement and critical thinking skills. Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): Supervision/oversight of adult and/or university volunteers to Linen-Powell Patient Resource Center in person or available within building Additional position requirements: Available on an as needed basis for 1-2 evening or weekend programs per month. Transportation to off-site programs within the VCU Health locations, Massey outreach locations, and community cancer events on an as needed basis.
