Position Summary
The Histology Laboratory Manager is responsible for daily Histology Laboratory operations primarily regarding lab staff supervision, manages lab budget and maintaining oversight of income, expenses and pricing strategies, record maintenance, as well as ensuring efficient operation of the lab.

LABORATORY FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT AND METRICS:

  • Reviews monthly income and expenses from Pathology Department Business Manager; manages pricing for laboratory services, resetting annually or as needed to insure an income adequate to run the laboratory; insures accurate prices are maintained within the LMIS.


  • Prepares monthly billing for the histology lab.
  • Responsible for all UGA Mart ordering and P Card ordering for all supplies needed to insure maximum laboratory efficiency, including maintaining and entering equipment contracts in UGA Mart and handling all equipment purchases.
  • Creates and keeps all accounts in Histology updated.
  • Create, update and manage all test codes, product codes and catalog items in VetView for Pathology, Histology and Flow Cytometry.
  • Maintain updated spreadsheets of all test codes and prices in VetView for Pathology (Mail-Ins and Biopsy) and Histology.
  • Responsible for updating prices on all product codes in Vet View for Pathology and Histology annually on July 1st.
  • Adjusts prices for special projects in Vet View and creates quotes for clients when needed.
  • Work with consumable company sales reps to obtain and maintain relationships and quotes for Histology's most important consumable items.
  • Assists Admin Office yearly in inventory by scanning all Histology Lab and Path grossing room equipment.

Duties/Responsibilities
SUPERVISES HISTOLOGY PERSONNEL:

  • Prioritizes and coordinates daily workflow of laboratory; plans, organizes, and supervises work schedules of laboratory employees; maintains records of all service agreements and evaluates options that financially benefit the laboratory; insures laboratory equipment is well maintained and in good working order; maintains training records of each laboratory employee; insures employee training and training records are current.


  • Maintains monthly histology schedule.
  • Maintains all Histology SOPs, ensures they are up to date and in OMNI and update all other histology forms as needed and update in OMNI.
  • Responsible for ensuring the laboratory operates in compliance with the AVDL quality system and AAVLD standards,
  • Hires, orients, trains, conducts performance evaluations, and initiates progressive disciplinary action if necessary, for Histology Lab personnel Supervises and hires DLAB grossing room technician and student workers as needed.
  • Maintains DLab service calendar and updated with information on the Pathologist/Resident on duty.
  • Assigns (along with DLab personnel) cases to Pathology Tuesday through Friday.
  • Receives mailroom emails from listserv and ensures Histology staff retrieves all mail each day.

Duties/Responsibilities
LABORATORY SERVICES:

  • Routine histology including processing, embedding, microtomy, staining of slides, daily accountability of samples, and operation and maintenance of laboratory equipment. Responsible for sending out slides and paperwork for external testing related to histology cases and send out external testing requests and maintain records.


  • Oversees grossing rooms and their personnel for the department and diagnostic lab, ensuring that they are adequately supplied, equipment is functional and facilities maintained. Ensures tissues are disposed of appropriately.
  • Manage Fidocure and Anivive accounts; answer hospital questions regarding histology questions and biopsy submissions to the department; manage eslide manager for slide scanning; maintain the Aperio slide scanner; work with Liming and UGA IT, as needed, to add new users and get their accounts and permissions set up and provides user management assistance for Pathology and Histology as needed.
  • Send updates for pricing and services for Histo website to Pathology Business Manager as information is modified, usually yearly.
  • Attend Departmental meetings such as the monthly DLab meetings and monthly Pathology Operations meetings to discuss updates/issues with Histo.
  • Responsible for weekly temperature monitoring charts for Dlab, signs off on charts and ensure saved on the PDrive for access.
  • Manages the cassette labeler and associated supplies for printing cassettes and trimming tissues in the Pathology grossing room.
  • Manage the listservs for the Histology lab for slide emails, HistoBiopsy, HistoAVDL and HistoSCWDS lists.

MAINTAINS PATHOLOGY ARCHIVES:

  • Ensures the environment (temperature and humidity) is maintained appropriately for the long-term storage of archived material including tissue samples; insures physical security of archived material; organizes and maintains archived material so that it is readily retrievable; maintains a process for effective check-out, check-in and tracking of archived material.


  • Manages archives for all slides and blocks.
