An electrophysiology (EP) lab is a designated space where electrophysiology studies (EPS) are conducted. These spaces contain hi-tech equipment used to monitor and map the electrical systems of the heart as well as treat heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias). Procedures conducted in the Ep lab include but are not limited to: Cardiac mapping-the movements of electrical impulses throughout the heart muscle are mapped in real time to help electrophysiologists see where an irregular heart rhythm may be originating. Cardiac ablation-catheters with electrodes are threaded to specific locations on the heart muscle. Electrodes can deliver electricity to induce an irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia) or stop the heart rhythm in order to achieve a diagnosis. The electricity or cold energy delivered via the catheters may also be used to destroy small areas of the heart muscle that were causing the arrhythmia. Device insertion/implantation-a pacemaker or implantable cardioverter defibrillator may be implanted to correct heart rhythm problems. Qualifications:
