Job Summary
Under constant supervision, this specialized technician will help build customized, state-of-the-art automation platform enclosures at Caltech for high-throughput protein production and biochemical and cell-based assays. The successful candidate should have some research knowledge as there may be an opportunity in the future to apply working knowledge of the automation platform enclosures to scientific research.
Essential Job Duties
- Using hand tools and electric screwdrivers, assist in building automation platform enclosures.
- Adhere to all safety requirements related to the handling of tools, equipment, and hardware.
- Gain research experience while working in close contact with other research personnel in the laboratory.
- May participate in training automation platform end-users.
- May apply working knowledge of the automation platform enclosures to scientific research.
Basic Qualifications
- Enrolled in or completed BS in biological, biochemical, or chemical sciences.
- Must possess some general knowledge of basic hand tools.
- Must be able to lift, push, pull, and carry a minimum of 30 pounds of tools, supplies, and equipment on a daily basis.
- Must be able to stoop, bend, pull, and kneel throughout the workday.
- Strong communication skills (both oral and electronic) and organizational skills.
- Problem-solving and service-oriented skills.
- Strong willingness to learn new skills when needed.
- Highly motivated, responsible, and proactive working style.
- Strong skills building and working in a cohesive lab team.
- Mission dedicated.
Preferred Qualifications
- BS or MS preferred in biological, biochemical, or chemical sciences.
- 1 or more years of experience, including familiarity with plate-based biochemical, nucleic acid-based, or cell-based assays.
- Mid-level computer skills, including familiarity with Excel formulas and assay data interpretation and visualization.
- Relevant lab experience for at least 1 or 2 years is preferred.
- Familiarity with automated liquid handling platforms and automated assay development.
- Computer literacy including some basic programming skills, preferably VBA/VB.NET in the MS Excel context, Arduino, 3D Printing, and CAD 3D modeling software (Fusion 360, Solidworks, Vention).

Hiring Range
$18.50 - $21.25 Per Hour
