The University of Arizona, College of Nursing (CON) is looking for an enthusiastic candidate to fill the Student Support Specialist position in the Office of Student & Academic Affairs (OSAA).

The Student Support Specialist will assist students in successfully integrating into the CON and thriving personally and academically. This person will be responsible for facilitating the mental/social well-being and academic growth and success of nursing students (across undergraduate and graduate program levels).

Through academic coaching, opportunities for ongoing development, and productive relationship facilitation, the Student Support Specialist will support students and student groups to foster student success. The work of the Student Support Specialist interfaces with OSAA academic advisors, faculty, and program directors to help ensure the coaching goals and activities align with the academic needs of students across nursing programs.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage a student coaching program.
  • Conduct effective student appointments for academic
    coaching utilizing learning science.
  • Identify and monitor the use of essential academic
    strategies for students during one-on-one meetings.
  • Provide student group support sessions, workshops, and
    drop-in services.
  • Create academic support resources and materials for
    students and faculty.
  • Develops trainings for CON Academic Advisors on
    learning theory and academic success strategies/resources.
  • Compile and utilize student data sources for proactive
    student success outreach.
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records from
    appointments and outreach that can assist in program reporting and
    assessment.
  • Prepare operational reports and analyses to identify progress, student needs, and recommendations for new approaches.
  • Develop/implement peer mentoring programs.
  • Coordinate CON basic needs initiatives.
  • Implement programs, materials, and website updates that
    support student success and mental well-being.
  • Understand, incorporate, and direct students to
    appropriate university resources, policies, and professionals to assist
    students in reaching their educational goals.
  • Collaborate with student success professionals in the
    CON and campus to ensure alignment with strategies and best practices.
  • Identify learning needs related to attention management, different abilities and communicate effectively to support and guide students to appropriate resources.
  • Present evidence-based content (e.g. NCLEX,
    pharmacology, success skills, teamwork) for student success at various
    courses and doctoral residency workshops.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the curriculum and learning experiences typical of nursing education and its professional dimension as it relates to student success in higher education.
  • Knowledge in implementing and facilitating a student
    success program that combines learning strategies, academic study skills,
    and student development theory and practice.
  • Has a proven track record in coaching and helping
    students achieve success in their academic program.
  • Knowledgeable about coaching strategies to help
    students enjoy learning and achieve their academic goals.
  • Strong, professional written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking.
  • Able to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt
    effective courses of action.
  • Possesses an enthusiastic, positive attitude with
    exceptional customer service skills.
  • Demonstrates creativity, flexibility, dependability,
    initiative, teamwork, organization, and a high standard of excellence.
  • Able to anticipate and identify student needs during
    critical times.
  • Ability to continually improve processes to enhance and advocate for the student experience.
  • Ability to establish and sustain positive, professional
    working relationships internally and cross-functionally.
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team in a
    service-oriented environment.
  • Ability
    to effectively use administrative systems, databases and standardized software
    programs, including Microsoft Office Suite.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a related field, with certification.
  • Experience with learning skill development and prescriptive advising.
  • Experience using UA software programs, including UAccess (Student and Analytics) and Trellis.
  • Experience working with diverse and underrepresented student populations.
  • Experience developing, implementing, and communicating new programs.
