Position Highlights Steward Observatory's Arizona Radio Observatory (ARO) and Mountain Operations are seeking exceptional candidates for the position of R&D Electrical Engineer III. The successful candidate will join a diverse group of scientists, engineers, and technicians who maintain and upgrade radio and optical telescopes operated in southern Arizona, including on Kitt Peak, Mt. Graham, Mt. Lemmon, and Mt. Bigelow. In addition to providing engineering support for telescope maintenance and upgrades, the successful candidate will provide engineering support in a team environment for development projects.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Support operations for telescopes operated by Steward Observatory in southern Arizona, including telescopes on Kitt Peak, Mt. Graham, Mt. Lemmon, and Mt. Bigelow. Identifies complex operating and performance problems and implements solutions. Operations support includes troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of equipment at telescope sites, providing guidance to telescope operators and other technical staff. Requires travel to the sites, sometimes with overnight stays.
  • Takes the lead in the engineering phase of projects, providing direction and coordination to engineers and technicians. Independently devises criteria for design, development, implementation, and commissioning of new electrical, electro-mechanical, and control systems for the telescopes and facilities. Improves and optimizes systems.
  • Oversees and provides engineering design and analysis to other Steward Observatory projects.
  • Additional duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering and 5 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience with motor control systems, AC and DC power systems, and servos.
  • Experience designing with devices such as Arduino, Raspberry PI, and other embedded systems.
  • Experience with monitor and control systems, industrial motion control, and thermal control systems.
  • Experience using Windows and Linux operating systems and networking hardware.
  • Experience with 2 or more programming languages.
  • Must be able to operate a UA motor vehicle and drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.
  • Must be able to work nights and weekends, including occasional overnight stays at telescope sites.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with optical or radio telescopes in operations or construction.
  • Experience with programmable logic controllers.
  • Experience with digital signal processing in FPGAs.
  • Experience in digital and analog circuit design.
  • Experience in circuit diagnostics, including field troubleshooting and repairs.
  • Experience with schematic capture as well as 2D and 3D CAD systems.
  • Experience with RF system components, concepts, and designs, and basic lab test equipment.
  • Experience with RF and microwave signal sources and phase-locked loops.
  • Experience designing RF circuit boards.
  • Experience with three-phase electrical control systems.
