The
CALS Human Resources Office aligns under the
CALS Dean's Office and serves as an HR umbrella team guiding the HR work of the twelve academic departments, centers, institutes and research stations. We provide HR services across the entire employee lifecycle including organizational design, staffing strategy, recruitment, retention, engagement, employee relations, leave administration, onboarding and offboarding, as well as targeted training and development. With employees located across the state in myriad work locations and environments, and positions serving in a wide array of roles associated with a land grant,
CALS HR executes one of the most complex HR functions on campus. The office is responsible for delivering HR services to these statewide employees, as well as campus-based employees covering the full complement of employee categories -
EPS,
SHRA, Tenure Track Faculty, Professional Track Facuty, Postdoctoral Fellows, Bi-weekly employees, No Pays and Visitors. All personnel actions are coordinated and serviced in this office and this unit maintains original personnel files. Knowledge of distinct applicable governing policies for each employee category is required.
Given the size, scope and complexity of units served, the
CALS Human Resources Office is one of the most complex and active HR offices on campus. The office is responsible for delivering the full complement of HR services for more than 1,200
EPS and
SHRA employees, 1,000 bi-weekly employees and student workers, 100 postdoctoral positions, and 1,000 No Pay appointments. Our HR Office has the largest customer base of any College on campus generating the highest volume of HR actions. |
Essential Job Duties |

Reporting to the Assistant Dean for HR in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and the Senior HR Partner, you will be responsible for providing high level management, guidance and consultation for assigned departments/units for their HR operational needs. In this role you will collaborate with fellow HR Consultants on the team, University Human Resources, department/unit HR/Business partners to help faculty, staff and managers develop and facilitate best practices in various areas of human resources. These interactions will include frequent consultation with Department Heads,
CALS Business Operations, Unit Leaders and the
CALS Dean and Directors.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic HR guidance and consultation to assigned departments/units within the College.
- Partner with departmental leadership to develop and implement HR strategies aligned with college and university goals.
- Advise and make recommendations on a wide range of HR matters, including policy interpretation, employee relations, compensation, and organizational development.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable HR laws and regulations.
- Conduct needs assessments and develop solutions to address HR challenges within assigned departments.
- Provide training and development to departmental staff on HR policies, procedures, and best practices.
- Collaborate with University HR and other stakeholders to ensure consistent and effective HR service delivery.
- Conduct compensation analyses and provide guidance on salary reviews, market adjustments, and reclassifications.
- Support organizational change initiatives and assist with succession planning.
- Contribute to College strategic plan goals, particularly those related to People. Enhance and implement onboarding and new employee experience initiatives.
- Conduct new employee training.
- Provide coaching and guidance to managers related to employee relations matters.
- Maintain strong relationships with department leaders, faculty, and staff.
- Demonstrate excellent customer service and communication skills.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of college-wide HR initiatives.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience |
- Bachelor's degree and two years of progressively responsible professional human resources management experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Degrees must be from appropriately accredited institutions.

- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills and the ability to work professionally, courteously, and effectively with a wide range of constituencies community, including students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal communication skills. This position requires sophisticated critical thinking and superior communication skills, analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as an individual who can build collaborative and trusting relationships with others.
- Proven collaboration skills.
- Exceptional analytical and planning skills with innovative, lean thinking; someone who can create efficiencies and streamline processes and practices.
- Strong computer skills, including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and the Google suite.

Preferred Qualifications |
- Experience analyzing, interpreting, applying, communicating and promoting HR best practices in the context of organizational goals and objectives.
- Human Resources Certifications-PHR/SPHR or SHRM-CP/SHRM SCP or comparable HR certification preferred. Other certifications related to the functions of the position.
- Experienced in presenting complex material to garner understanding and buy-in.
- Experience with new employee programs including onboarding, mentoring, orientation, etc.
- Knowledge and understanding of the land grant system will be greatly beneficial for purposes of organizational understanding. Particularly a knowledge of Extension and how it operates in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
- Experience in a higher education HR-related area, preferably within the UNC System.
