Job Overview:

The Public Health Veterinarian will oversee the Waterborne and Zoonotic Disease Program within the TDH Division of Communicable and Environmental Diseases and Emergency Preparedness (CEDEP). The Public Health Veterinarian will be responsible for providing veterinary public health and zoonotic disease consultation, supporting routine surveillance, facilitating engagement and outreach to veterinary, public health, governmental, and academic partners and serving as a major contributor to the Tennessee One Health Committee and initiatives. They will support emergency preparedness and response efforts related to zoonotic and One Health threats.

The Waterborne and Zoonotic Disease Program includes epidemiology, environmental health and administrative staff and is responsible for disease surveillance, outbreak response, illness prevention initiatives, and wastewater surveillance. The Public Health Veterinarian will support program oversight including grant submission and budget management. They will supervise up to four staff and serve as a preceptor for veterinary student externships. The position will report to the Waterborne and Zoonotic & COVID-19 Director Epidemiologist 3.

Key Responsibilities:

* Provide veterinary consultation to support zoonotic disease investigations, outbreak response and requests for expertise from public health partners, government agencies, or the public.

* Collaborate with internal teams (ex. Foodborne and Enteric Disease Program, Vector-borne Program) and agencies involved in animal health and zoonotic disease surveillance and response (ex. Tennessee Department of Agriculture, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency).

* Support emergency preparedness and response efforts for zoonotic and One Health threats (e.g. avian and pandemic influenza).

* Strengthen partnerships with the veterinary community through active engagement with veterinary associations (ex. National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians), academic institutions and serving as a preceptor for veterinary externships.

* Coordinate rabies risk assessments and the annual rabies interagency meeting.

*Represent TDH in national professional organizations and present at state and national conferences.

* Oversee the implementation of a Tennessee One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritization Workshop.

* Contribute to the Tennessee One Health Committee, lead the planning committee and facilitate routine interagency meetings.

* Oversee the development of grant narratives, budgets and timely submission of progress reports.

* Supervise and provide mentorship to epidemiology, environmental health and administrative professionals within the program.

Minimum Qualifications:

Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine

Required Experience:

Preferred qualifications: Public health surveillance and response experience, program management, supervisory experience
