Position Overview


Position Summary
The purpose of the police telecommunicator position is to manage the telecommunications center during his/her 12-hour shifts, including performing duties such as dispatching fire alarms; monitoring close circuit television cameras; responding to calls via telephone, alarm console, or emergency call box; dispatching WSSU officers; calling Winston Salem City police and fire departments as needed; operating the SBI/ DCI computer system; answering requests for information from the general public.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The primary purpose of the Winston Salem State University Department of Public Safety is to provide police, parking, traffic, and health and safety services to the campus community.

Minimum Experience/Education
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.

Requires certification as a Division of Criminal Information computer operator or the ability to achieve certification within 45 days of employment.

Some positions may require Basic Telecommunicator Certification in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.

Employee must attain and maintain certification on all modules of the SBI/ CDI system, including periodic re-examination as mandated by state law.
Required License or Certification
