Position Overview


Position Summary
This position will manage the production lab, offer instructional sessions on media hardware and software; assist patrons with using software and hardware as they produce media assignments; maintain the equipment and software required to offer a first quality media production lab; create marketing packages for library services; transform marketing slides into the correct format to upload images and videos on to the library LCD panels; assist as needed with setting up other equipment for library instruction or meetings.

  • Develop and offer media literacy instruction to classes across the curriculum; Increase the number of instruction sessions offered.
  • Supervise and work with mass communication interns who are completing their assignment in the library; help them have a quality learning experience
  • Develop library marketing packages that inform the community about the services and programs offered; help staff increase the awareness of services provided and collections that are available
  • Manage the library production lab; request replacement equipment and software needed to maintain a viable service
  • Maintain and provide reports on the services provided; Work with staff and students to increase service demands
  • Help staff members develop and maintain a visual marketing system which informs the staff of service hours and services.
  • Assist as needed with setting up computer equipment
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The O'Kelly Library supports and enhances all Winston-Salem State University programs through its relevant, diverse, and current local collection and through resources outside the library such as via interlibrary loan and various electronic services. These services ensure that the information requirements of distant users are also met. The staff instructs and assists users with all aspects of library services to foster and instill lifelong learning. A readily accessible computerized index is maintained of all library holdings and other appropriate records. Sufficient auxiliary services and equipment are maintained at all times to respond to the ever changing needs of our users. The staff strives to preserve resources and archive university records and related documents.

Minimum Experience/Education
Graduation from a four-year college or university and one year of experience in a library or archives and/or records management; or high school and five years of experience in a library or archives and/or records management; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Professional Knowledge Have sufficient knowledge of media production hardware and software to assist others and to maintain a viable media production center; demonstrate current knowledge of video production including supporting computer hardware and software; have sufficient knowledge of software and hardware to maintain an in-house LCD marketing system; be well versed in video production so quality products about library services can be produced; have current knowledge of marketing techniques and supporting technologies; have the capability to stay current with the latest advances in media production and public relations. Program Administration Have the expertise to manage the library media production lab; schedule staff so that the required level of service and assistance are offered; keep an adequate quantity of current equipment as well as the appropriate software accessible to complete assignments; provide daily and monthly reports on the service offered; request personnel, equipment or software adjustments as needed. Continue developing efforts that will keep the media production lab a viable learning environment. Consultation Offer assistance to students, faculty and librarians on developing and utilizing media within instruction and marketing packages. Help faculty members structure media based learning activities which result in students reaching a specific level of media literacy. Communicate with library and university personnel to ensure that compatible software and hardware are used in the library as is found in the mass communication and graphic design labs. Supervise and work with mass communication interns helping them build their production skill level. Decision Making Select the appropriate equipment and software necessary to maintain a relevant program; determine the appropriate service hours to ensure that the greatest number of students are assisted; have sufficient knowledge to guide the library marketing effort to reach the goals as established by the library advisors. Sufficient leadership skills must be demonstrated to coordinate and move media/ marketing projects forward and ensuring that they are completed in a timely professional manner
