New Hanover County is seeking a skilled and experienced Vehicle Mechanic to join our Facilities Management Department. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated professional who takes pride in maintaining and repairing a diverse fleet of County vehicles and equipment to ensure they remain in top working condition. This role is responsible for diagnosing mechanical issues, performing necessary repairs, and conducting scheduled preventative maintenance on a variety of County-owned vehicles and equipment. Your expertise will help support essential County operations by ensuring that all vehicles are safe, reliable, and operating efficiently. Essential Duties include:
- Performs the routine repair and maintenance of County vehicles which includes troubleshooting and diagnosing problems by operating testing equipment and tools.
- Researches, sources, and orders parts needed for repairs.
- Cleans and organizes the repair and tool shops by maintaining the inventory of repair parts, shop tools, and shop supplies and checking out repair tools and supplies.
- Performs final test-drives and safety checks on equipment.
- Completes work orders and maintains accurate electronic records to include details on services completed and parts used in repairs
- Provides ongoing updates to customers while equipment and/or vehicles are being repaired.
- Schedules preventative maintenance as needed.
- Conducts road and emissions tests.
- Prepare vehicles and/or equipment for public auction.
- Performs work with regular and predictable attendance consistently meeting the scheduling needs as required by the county.
- Performs work during emergency/disaster situations.
- Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, OR ABILITIES
Knowledge of heavy equipment repair; lubricant principles and usage; welding and boiler codes and inspection criteria; mechanical practices, including cutting, welding, fabricating and rigging; hydraulics principles; signage requirements; safety requirements and procedures; automotive repair, maintenance and part identification; customer service principles; gasoline and diesel engine operation; adjustment and repair of automotive systems; and small engine maintenance and repair.
Skilled in operating computers and position related software applications; keeping records; measuring precisely; estimating job time requirements; welding and burning metal; operating motor vehicles; checking vehicle fluids; Driving and operating heavy machinery; operating equipment including pressure washers, cranes, grinders and conveying systems; troubleshooting equipment; reading electrical diagrams and manuals; operating equipment and power tools; using a variety of tools and equipment; repairing and maintaining vehicles; installing and removing parts; providing customer service; communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.

Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday - Friday.
Must be available to report for emergency work assignment during emergency situations.
Employment Type: Full-time, non-exempt
Salary Information: The hiring range for this position is $44,152.00 - $59,605.50 annually plus a competitive benefits package. Salary will be determined based on qualifications, internal equity, budget, and market considerations.

Qualifications

Required Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or equivalent, and five (5) years of related equipment maintenance and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licenses/Certifications
-
- Valid Driver's License (from any state) and good driving record required at time of application.
- Valid North Carolina Driver's License required by first date of employment with good driving record.
Requirements for continued employment
- North Carolina A/C Inspection License - must be obtained no later than six (6) months of employment
Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification preferred.
On-Board Diagnostics II (OBDII) Inspection License preferred.
Some positions may require: Valid North Carolina Commercial Driver License, and Small Engine Repair Certification, preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORKING CONDITIONS The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, walking. The work is typically performed in an environment where the employee may be exposed to varying temperature and/or weather conditions as well as varying degrees of distractions, conditions and/or chemicals and/or tools and machinery, and work with/operate potentially dangerous equipment which requires the employee to pay attention to one's own safety as well as that of co-workers.
