Position Description


As a senior civil engineer, you will play a key role in leading and managing complex engineering projects from conception to completion. You will leverage your extensive experience and technical expertise to provide guidance to junior engineers, oversee project teams, and ensure the successful delivery of projects within scope, budget, and schedule. Primarily the engineer will be asked to:

1.) Perform professional civil engineering work to develop, investigate, and design construction and maintenance projects in support of Santee Cooper's dams and dikes. Other projects may be focused on generating stations, transmission system, properties, and economic development activities.
2.) Assist with the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) compliance requirements.
3.) Be responsible for multiple engineering projects from concept to completion, and providing technical expertise as a corporate resource to all departments as directed by unit supervision.
4.) Perform project management of projects to ensure adherence to budget and schedule, resource allocation, etc. to optimize efficiency and minimize cost with maintaining high quality deliverables.

Essential Job Tasks:
Dams and Dikes:

  • Responsible for the oversight of the Santee Cooper Project's 40 miles of earthen embankment and associated concrete structures.
    Responsibilities include the inspection and monitoring of the dams, dikes, and instrumentation on the Project; structural evaluation of earthen dams, concrete structures, and spillway gates; construction oversight during repairs to Project features; project management; and regulatory coordination with FERC.

  • Additional requirements included:
  • Performing engineering computations related to site design, foundation design, structure design, etc. on the dams from concept to completion. NOTE: Computations will include knowledge and application of engineering concepts and standards. Projects are often several million dollar investments in capital or involve complex investigations to reduce likelihood of failure.
  • Creates engineering and construction plans and specifications for construction projects. Prepares purchase requisitions, bid packages, and material orders to acquire materials, equipment, and/or services necessary for construction projects and engineering projects.
  • Prepares necessary permitting documents and submittals throughout various phases of a project. NOTE: Attendance and participation in public meetings may be required.
  • Serves as the project lead for assigned projects by attending project meetings and managing design activities and material/equipment/service acquisitions to meet the project schedules.
  • Ensures that all projects are completed in accordance with approved design guidelines accurately and within the scheduled time frame. Provides project update status to management on routine bases.


  • Projects and Project Management:

Projects are often several million dollar investments in capital or involve complex investigations to repair a failure.
  • Creates engineering and construction plans and specifications for construction projects. Prepares purchase requisitions, bid packages, and material orders to acquire materials, equipment, and/or services necessary for construction projects and engineering projects.
  • Prepares necessary permitting documents and submittals throughout various phases of a project. NOTE: Attendance and participation in County, City, and Municipality public meetings may be required.
  • Serves as the project lead for assigned projects by attending project meetings and managing design activities and material/equipment/service acquisitions to meet the project schedules.
  • Ensures that all projects are completed in accordance with approved design guidelines accurately and within the scheduled time frame. Provides project update status to management on routine bases.


  • Technical Expertise:
  • Provide expert-level technical guidance in areas such as structural analysis, geotechnical engineering, hydrology and hydrological analysis, transportation planning, and/or environmental sustainability. Focus of expertise will be geared toward the Santee Cooper Project 199 (dams and dikes).


  • Innovation and Optimization:
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance project delivery processes, optimize resource utilization, and incorporate emerging technologies or methodologies.


  • Standards:
  • Utilizes unit CAD and design standards. Reviews and updates specifications. Participates in review meetings, interfaces with vendors, and follows all standard procedures. Maintains contact with vendors to keep abreast of new designs and technologies.

  • Project Leadership:
  • Lead multidisciplinary teams in the planning, design, and execution of civil engineering projects, ensuring adherence to technical standards, regulatory requirements, and client specifications.


  • Regulatory Compliance:
  • Stay abreast of relevant industry regulations, codes, and standards, ensuring all projects adhere to legal requirements and permitting processes. Particularly the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC), US Army COE, and SCDHEC.


  • Team Development:
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers, providing guidance on technical skills development, project management techniques, and career growth opportunities.


  • Position Requirements


    *Will consider Sr. Engineer, Engineer III, Engineer II or Engineer I

    Sr. Engineer

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited college/university +8 years experience required.
  • PE license required.
  • Background in site design, foundation design, and/or structural design preferred.
  • Must demonstrate strong communication and computer skills.


  • Compensation Information:
    $102,560 - $128,200 (min.-mid.)

    Engineer III
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited college/university +5 years experience required.
  • FE license required.
  • Background in site design, foundation design, and/or structural design preferred.


  • Compensation Information:
    $91,990 - $114,990 (min.-mid.)

    Engineer II
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited college/university +2 years experience required.
  • FE license preferred.
  • Background in site design, foundation design, and/or structural design preferred.


  • Compensation Information:
    $82,520 - $103,140 (min.-mid.)

    Engineer I
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an EAC/ABET accredited college/university required.
  • FE license preferred.


  • Compensation Information:
    $74,010 - $92,500 (min.-mid.)
