About the University of Georgia |
Since our founding in 1785, the University of Georgia has operated as Georgia's oldest, most comprehensive, and most diversified institution of higher education
(https://www.uga.edu/). The proof is in our more than 235 years of academic and professional achievements and our continual commitment to higher education.
UGA is currently ranked among the top 20 public universities in U.S. News & World Report. The University's main campus is located in Athens, approximately 65 miles northeast of Atlanta, with extended campuses in Atlanta, Griffin, Gwinnett, and Tifton.
UGA employs approximately 3,100 faculty and more than 7,700 full-time staff. Academic programs reside in 19 schools and colleges, including our newly formed School of Medicine. |
About the College/Unit/Department |
The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University and the University of Georgia partnered to create a four-year medical school campus in Athens to help alleviate a statewide shortage of physicians that threatens the health of Georgians.
The AU/
UGA Medical Partnership combines the significant instructional and research resources of
UGA, the birthplace of public higher education, with the expertise from one of the country's first, and Georgia's only public medical school, the Medical College of Georgia.
In addition to increasing the number of physicians in Georgia, the partnership is expanding research collaborations between AU and
UGA, creating new insights into the prevention and treatment of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. Students have the opportunity to learn in small group class sizes, while having the benefit of being part of one of the largest medical schools in the United States.
Georgia currently ranks 40th in the nation in the ratio of physicians to population. It also faces a number of health challenges, including a high infant mortality rate and high rates of obesity and heart disease. Through expanded medical education and research, the AU/
UGA Medical Partnership is addressing these issues to improve the health and prosperity of our state. |
