  • Bachelor's degree in Landscape or Horticulture
  • Georgia Pesticide License

Position Summary
This incumbent will be responsible for landscape and horticulture maintenance duties throughout all the main campus as well as the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Health Science Campus, and the Riverbend communities. The Landscape Manager will directly supervise Grounds Landscape, Horticulture Foreman, Mechanic Foreman and Urban Forester to plan and coordinate work activities of area landscape and horticulture crews and the equipment maintenance shop. The manager will also hold informational, and training meetings related to productivity, safety, and other related topics. The Landscape Manager will provide guidance and supervision to the Grounds Landscape, Horticulture Foremen, Mechanic foreman and Urban Forester. This employee will be responsible for the operation of typical landscape and horticulture maintenance equipment as well as the maintenance and service needs of such equipment. This department will interact with other departments within the Facilities Management Division to coordinate projects that impact campus grounds. This individual will interact with the Office of University Architects to review landscape plans for capital and restorative projects and ensure installations meet UGA Grounds Maintenance standards. This incumbent will interact with other campus departments to provide support for activities throughout campus.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Thorough knowledge of general landscape management practices and methods, including maintenance, installation and chemical application, including best management practices (BMP's).
  • Thorough knowledge of general irrigation management practices and methods, including maintenance and installation.
  • Knowledge of basic safety measures associated with landscape management.
  • Ability to read, interpret and implement architectural, landscape architectural and engineering drawings with sufficient mathematical skill to calculate quantities and prepare cost estimates.
  • Skills and ability in the management and supervision of employees.
  • Ability to plan, prioritize and implement multiple maintenance, repair and construction projects.
  • Ability to work effectively with senior executives, administrators, consultants and/or the public.
  • Exceptional organizational skills; ability to maintain files accurately in paper and software programs.
  • Ability to use computers and basic spreadsheets, e-mail, work order and word processing programs.
  • Ability and willingness to work cooperatively with other units in emergency response situations requiring equipment operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing, and the ability to establish and maintain good working relationships both up and down the chain-of- command.

Physical Demands

  • Work outside under adverse weather conditions (rain, hot and cold weather)
  • Visits construction sites where the terrain is uneven and rough Regular on-site inspections involving walking through active construction sites. Walking and maneuvering around construction sites in varying stages of completion.
  • Lift up to 75lbs throughout shift.
  • Stand for long periods of time, stoop, bend, walk, climb stairs, work from a standard and extended ladder, and work with hands above head.
  • Work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Create daily work assignments and coordinate with foremen to administer work. Inspect work in progress and modify work assignments as needed for scope changes and/or emergencies.

  • Routinely monitor all campus grounds (including irrigations systems and fountains and determine appropriate levels of maintenance and plan accordingly.
  • Evaluate plant, tree and turf needs to include overall health, potential hazards, pest/disease management, moisture levels, pruning requirements, etc. throughout campus.
  • Schedule corrective/preventative measures as needed.
  • Ensure work is completed in a safe manner.
  • Coordinate inclement weather response of the landscape maintenance shop.
  • review landscape plans for capital and restorative projects and ensure installations meet UGA Grounds Maintenance standards
