Minimum Qualifications
Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience installing cabling in an enterprise environment according to redetermined standards. Experience with installing access points is a plus.
Position Summary
This position's main responsibility will be to perform new installations and replacements of wireless access points for the student technology project and departmental requests. It will also be responsible for the day-to-day troubleshooting of disassociated access points, as those may leave gaps in wireless network coverage. Configuring access points is also a key task of this position.

  • The ability to perform cable installations according to industry and UGA standardshis includes end-to-end installations. Able to perform cable installations on their own.

Install or replace access points according to the wireless design document. This includes installing the cable from the appropriate telecommunications closet to the access point location, terminating and testing both ends of the cable, and performing other related tasks in the telecommunications closet. It also includes the physical installation of access points in predetermined locations.

Duties/Responsibilities

  • Install hardware systems such as cable trays, ladder racks, J-hooks, and/or D-rings to support telecommunications cable pulls. Pull telecommunications cabling through the wide variety of building architectures (both old and new) found on the University of Georgia main campus and other UGA-owned and leased locations and through buried conduit (outside plant) routed between buildings. Building pulls include both vertical (riser) and horizontal runs.


  • Prepare telecommunications rooms (Main Distribution Frames-MDF and Intermediate Distribution Frames-IDF) in UGA buildings to function as central and secondary distribution nodes for telecommunications cabling networks.
  • Uses industry-standard methods for organizing cable runs to ensure the cables are grouped according to destination. Carefully dresses cable bundle to assure all cables are routed in a neat, orderly appearance. Properly labels the cables at both the work area and wiring closet ends.
  • Utilizes industry standard techniques for determining the length of cable needed to reach the point of termination to ensure sufficient slack for reterminating, if necessary, and to provide adequate strain relief. Install work area outlets that enable connection of the customer's equipment to the building telecommunications network.
  • Implement firestopping techniques when appropriate for telecommunications cabling installations
  • Test, certify, and troubleshoot copper, fiber optic, and wireless networks using appropriate test equipment.
  • Employ and ensure that all applicable ANSI/EIA/TIA standards or manufacturer-recommended techniques for accomplishing the termination types are used.
