Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The Department of Geography and Environment is a research and teaching department located within the College of Arts & Sciences. The Department supports a Ph.D. program, an M.A. program, a B.A. program, and 3 undergraduate minors. We also support a GIS graduate certificate program. The Department of Geography and Environment at Carolina brings a unique perspective to the study of some of our world's most pressing issues. Geographers integrate physical science, social science, and the humanities to study social and environmental patterns and processes on the earth's surface. From analyzing regional dynamics of climate change, hydrology, vegetation, and biodiversity to investigating new global structures of work and labor, religion, public health, our faculty and students conduct cutting-edge research at one of the top geography departments in the country.
Position Summary
This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The Accounting Technician position in the Department of Geography & Environment is responsible for financial and administrative support within the Department. The Accounting Technician is an integral part of the core office staff in the Department, along with a Business Officer/Department Manager, and an Administrative Support Associate/Student Services Manager. The Department has a faculty of 30 members, who have active research agendas. Also supported are about 50 graduate students, and about 150 undergraduate students (majors and minors). The Department of Geography and Environment is also home of the Southeast Regional Climate Center ( SERCC) funded by NOAA. The Accounting Technician is also responsible for accounting needs for SERCC.

The Accounting Technician's duties include:

  • Management and coordination of all financial operations of the department, including approval, monitoring, and projection of expenditures on all accounts, and reporting of fund balances. Reconciling of expenses via Concur.

  • Primary management of P-Cards, CONCUR, T&E expenses, CBM.
  • Assist with pre and post award contract and grant processing.
  • Act as backup when the Department Manager is unavailable
  • Provide other administrative processes as needed in support of the department.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience in accounting work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Detail-oriented, team oriented, and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Must also have the ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Familiar with UNC accounting systems (ConnectCarolina, RAMSeS, InfoPorte, Concur). The preferred candidate will have prior experience with grants, both pre-award and post-award.
