Automation Engineering Intern

This position will support the sustainment and development of Bal Seal Engineering's automated production and inspection equipment. The position requires a "Hands On" approach that will involve actively managing day to day production equipment issues, support of continuous improvement initiatives along with projects focused on machine upgrades, and new machine development. Candidates must have excellent communication skills, good problem-solving capabilities and the ability to work collaboratively across the organization.

Pay range is $22-25 per hour depending upon experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:




  • Assist in the diagnosis and troubleshooting of various machines and automated equipment to support production operations
  • Assist with the design of new tools to expand existing machine capabilities, reduce machine downtime, or improve sustainability
  • Contribute to the development of automated solutions for manual processes or equipment
  • Contribute testing and verification of machine functionality and improvements
  • Participate in cross departmental meetings to align objectives and priorities



Education:




  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/ Engineering Technology/ Automation or equivalent



Experience:



  • No experience required, 1 year preferred
  • Experience with 3D modeling software Solidworks and/or Inventor
  • Strong computer skills and analytical skills
  • Assembly and/or manufacturing shop floor experience is a plus
  • Base knowledge of machining tolerances and process capabilities



Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be able to promote and work in a highly collaborative environment
  • Must be hands on and interface with plant personnel and operators
  • Strong computer skills and utilization of Microsoft Office tools
  • Ability to effectively and safely utilize various hand and power tools
  • Basic ability to identify and solve problems with little direction or assistance
  • Basic ability to troubleshoot mechanical and electrical systems as well as the ability to conduct root cause analysis
  • Basic knowledge of pneumatic and electrical actuators and systems
  • Basic knowledge of fabrication methods and associated tolerances
  • Basic knowledge of manufacturing methods and processes
  • Basic knowledge in machine element design (i.e. fasteners, bearings, gear and belt drive etc.)
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of GD&T best practices, ASME Y14.5-2018
  • Basic knowledge in Design for Manufacturability and Assembly (DFMA) best practices
  • Proficient with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks and/or Inventor preferred)



Physical Requirements:


  • This position is mainly sedentary and is therefore, required to sit
  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk throughout the facility
  • Frequent lifting and/or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or move up to 25 pounds
  • Occasionally will need to bend, stoop and squat

  • The work environment conditions are typical of a manufacturing environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the basic functions. The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet to moderate, however, hearing protection may be required if employee enters high noise areas as a part of their normal job duties.
