The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking highly skilled, motivated students to work alongside our world class engineers developing, assembling, and testing hardware for a program in the Strategic and Military Space (SMS) division. The program will be completing the Critical Design Reviews over the next several months and beginning flight fabrication. It is a great time to join the team and experience the process of completing a space-based instrument. Our students are an integral part of the development team and support project reviews, deliveries, and integration with the hope of becoming full-time employees upon graduation, depending on funding, performance, and program needs.

The selected candidates must be able to work as part of larger engineering teams, both internal and external to the SDL organization. You will need to own all aspects of your assigned responsibility alongside your mentor.

The duration of employment is expected to begin as soon as possible and is expected to continue until graduation.

Tasks will include:

  • Assisting senior engineers with the fabrication, assembly, and test of prototype, engineering units, flight-like and ground support equipment (GSE) hardware
  • Creating and executing test procedures, travelers, parts tracking and kitting
  • Assisting with equipment operation during calibration and environmental testing
  • Working with Quality Assurance to ensure customer requirements have been met and properly documented
  • The selected students will work 20 hours per week during the school year and up to 40 hours per week when school is not in session
Minimum Requirements:
  • Must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain a US Government security clearance
  • Sophomore or junior currently enrolled at USU in a related engineering program
  • Ability to be hands-on, handle sensitive equipment, use hand tools, etc.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision once trained
  • Ability to work closely in a team with students and professionals
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong MS Office skills
  • Ability to occasionally work non-standard hours (nights or weekends) when required for hardware testing
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Optical background and understanding of fundamental optics principles are preferred
  • Experience with CAD(SolidWorks, Solid Edge, or similar) with willingness to learn Solid Edge at SDL
