The Detroit Free Press seeks a reporter for one of its most important and high-profile jobs: Coverage of Ford Motor Co., which to us is a local business, major employer, civic leader and global icon. Every story you write will have a both national audience and strong local following.
We value journalism of first impression that reveals the inner workings, struggles and successes of our automakers; work that informs our audiences about the cutting edge of automotive technology and trends; and, critically, consumer-focused stories about the experience of buying, owning and driving a modern vehicle.
Covering Ford for us means covering an employer for thousands of Michigan residents and their families and covering a consumer product company whose vehicles are driven by millions of Americans. It means holding a private business accountable for its shortcomings and personnel actions while recognizing its innovation and successes.
We seek reporters with three years of demonstrated enterprise and accountability experience, who can show the ability to break news and be a storyteller. While business or auto reporting experience is helpful, our experience shows that it is not required.
Responsibilities:
• Develop deep understanding of the auto industry, including product development, technology, finances and regulatory oversight.
• Build sourcing within the company and industry to gain insight into trends and internal operations.
• Offer in-depth and useful multi-media coverage of issues related to Ford Motor Co. as a major employer and producer of consumer products, and of consumer experience with Ford's vehicles.
• Develop familiarity with audience metrics to focus your time on issues that resonate with our customers.
Requirements:
• At least three years of reporting experience that includes enterprise and investigative work and demonstrates source development.
• Comfort using social media platforms; including but not limited to Facebook, X, Instagram and Reddit.
• Proficiency in finding trends in data.
• Experience taking photos and video on a mobile device.
• Strong communication skills, news judgment and headline-writing ability.
• Ability to efficiently manage multiple stories and projects at the same time.
• Ability to multitask and excel under deadline pressure.
• Ability to work collaboratively.
• Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills; familiarity with AP style.
This role requires a valid driver's license, reliable transportation and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
Application Instructions:
We are eager to learn more about you and how you fit this role. When you apply, don't limit your upload to a resume; show us what you've done. To do so, put together a single document file that includes the following, in this order:
• Your resume - one to two pages.
• A cover letter that outlines how you would approach the job.
• Links or PDFs of three to five samples of your work. Show us what you've produced or had a hand in that best reflects what you can do in your desired role.
It is important that these items be assembled into a single document and uploaded in PDF format. Completing these steps will ensure that your application receives the highest consideration.
