The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and its School of Anthropology invite applications for the position of Director, School of Anthropology, starting Fall 2025. The successful candidate will have a distinguished record of scholarship and academic achievement, demonstrated leadership and administrative skills, and demonstrated commitment to collaboration and engagement with diverse scholars and stakeholders. As a faculty member, the candidate will be expected to maintain a strong and productive research program at UA, and national and international standing in their field; effectively mentor and advise graduate students, exhibit excellence in graduate and undergraduate teaching; and demonstrate commitments to service to the university and public engagement and outreach. The candidate will also help to develop innovative approaches to enhancing student engagement, fostering diversity, and expanding collaborations through community, state, and international interaction and outreach. Field of specialization for this position is open, but preference will be given to candidates who value the full range of theories and methods that anthropologists embrace, who have strong commitments to interdisciplinary engagement, and who complement the School's existing intellectual strengths and pursuits. The School of Anthropology is a vibrant and diverse working and learning environment comprised of five subfields: archaeology, biological anthropology, linguistic anthropology, sociocultural anthropology, and applied anthropology. The School offers three undergraduate degrees: BA in Anthropology, BS in Human Biology, and BS in Archaeological Sciences, as well as undergraduate minors in Anthropology. Graduate degrees offered by the School are a Ph.D. in Anthropology, a Dual Ph.D. with Middle Eastern and North African Studies, a Joint Ph.D. with Linguistics, an M.A. in Applied Archaeology, and a Graduate Certificate in Medical Anthropology. Duties & Responsibilities |
The Director is expected to be an engaged and visionary leader who can advance the School's mission by attracting, mentoring, and retaining the highest quality faculty, fostering and expanding the School's research activities and funding, maintaining innovative educational programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, recruiting and retaining excellent staff, and upholding the University's and the School's commitments to broadening access, support, and mentorship of students from historically excluded backgrounds and first-generation students. The Director will maintain a national and international profile and be involved in fundraising. Fostering effective communication within the School, among university communities, and through public engagement and outreach are also key responsibilities of the position. The Director is expected to be responsive to opportunities and challenges, with the ability to harness existing strengths and emergent directions within the School, the University, and the profession. |
